Job summary
This new innovative and exciting role has been created to support the expansion and oversight of a Physician Associate Programme at Walsall healthcare NHS Trust (WHT). The addition of PAs to clinical workforce at WHT is novel, therefore this post will be an important milestone to mark the establishment of a programme currently in its infancy.
The post holder will be based at the Manor Learning and Conference Centre (MLCC).
With direct oversight and support from the Trust Lead, the post holder will initiate and coordinate the development and expansion of the PA programme at primarily at WHT and may be required to flex within the role to support the more established programme at RWT depending on operational demand. They will be responsible for providing leadership oversight of the operational strategy and management of the physician associate workforce, working collaboratively with the Associate Medical Director in addition to other key members of staff involved in the PA programme
Main duties of the job
LeadershipThe successful candidate will be expected to:
Coordinate the development and expansion of the PA programme at the Trust
Provide support to the PA workforce as the role becomes established at WHT
Attend meetings with the senior leadership team as required
Organise and manage the education programme for the qualified PAs
Liaise with HEIs when necessary
Oversee the development of policies and governance for the PA programme
Maintain and further develop a local and national profile as a Physician Associate leader. They will provide ideas regarding the development of services for the patient group and a robust central programme.

ClinicalThe successful candidate will be expected to:
Practise under the supervision of the Consultants/SpRs in the speciality of choice
Demonstrate high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care
Take part in all of the treatment and preventative healthcare services of the employing facility when necessary, and work within the policies and procedures of the organisation.
Take patient histories and perform physical examinations of a patient, by face to face contact or telephone contact with General Practitioners. All information to be recorded in the patients medical records.
Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies, or various other therapies.
Establish differential diagnoses, make appropriate treatment plans, and initiate emergency treatment.
Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to create an appropriate management plan for the patient e.g. Social Services, Community Nurse Team, Clinical Nurse Specialists to ensure good working relationships.
Instruct and counsel patients regarding mental and physical health, including:
a) Diet and advice
b) Disease and disease prevention
c) Treatment
d) Normal development
Refer and converse with appropriate specialists regarding patient management.
Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to PA training/experience/ competencies, such as:
a) Initiation of IV therapy by peripheral, central, intraosseous routes, and venous cutdown.
b) Injections
c) Venepuncture
d) Initiation of Basic/Advanced Life Support in all patients and in all settings.
e) Administration of medications
f) Other interventions or procedures as directed by the supervising physician, may include more invasive procedures i.e. lumbar puncture, ascitic and pleural procedures.
Work towards prescribing as appropriate.
Work towards taking responsibility for actively discharging patients and provide accurate information to General Practitioners.
Perform other tasks, not prohibited by law in which the physician associate has been trained and is proficient to performed
Support outpatient clinics as appropriate.
