Job summary

We are offering an exciting opportunity for two Apprentice Property Maintenance Operatives to join the Hospital's busy multi-skilled Estates and Facilities Department.

Successful candidates will have a great opportunity to train and work alongside dedicated teams working hard to keep our hospital sites running smoothly every day.

You will be supported to undertake a Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative course at Weymouth College starting in January 2024, with 1 day a week allocated for study or college attendance.

You will have great opportunities to work with qualified Estates and Facilities team members undertaking a variety of routine maintenance tasks and minor responsive repair work with direction and support including learning a broad range of fundamental trade skills including carpentry, joinery, plumbing, external building works and associated finishing trades such as tiling, painting, decorating and flooring.

This is a fixed term role for the duration of the Level 2 apprenticeship with the opportunity for further training to develop your skills further through a level 3 apprenticeship and opportunities to progress into a qualified role within our team.

Main duties of the job

Working and training as part of a multi skilled team to support the activities of the Estates and Facilities Department in the assessment, maintenance, decoration, and repair of the hospital estate. Assist the team by responding to delegated requests from end-users assisting with general maintenance tasks under direction related to all properties, conducting minor installations and repairs to the structure fabric, fixtures, and fittings.

  • Plan and carry out preventative property maintenance.
  • Carry out plumbing maintenance and repairs.
  • Carry out electrical testing and repairs.
  • Understand and maintain heating ventilation and air conditioning plant.
  • Internal and External Building Fabric Maintenance
  • Decoration, e.g., painting, tiling, plaster repairs, etc.
  • Carpentry/Joinery, boxing in, cupboards, shelving, etc.
  • Flooring, carpet tiles, lino, etc.
  • Grounds & gardens, drains, and gullies, etc.
  • Non-Destructive Entry, locks, keys, code pads, etc.
  • Control of property maintenance related resources and equipment
  • Working with external contractors

The Apprentice will provide and receive internal and external instructions and will represent the Trust as a member of the Estates team. The post holder will be responsible for building and maintaining strong customer relationships with stakeholders.

The apprentice hold GSCE Grade E/2 or above in English & Maths or Functional Skills Level 1 in English & Maths and have some practical knowledge and personal experience of building and DIY.

  1. ANALYTICAL & JUDGEMENTAL

The Apprentice will provide and receive information verbally, electronically and in writing to internal and external stakeholders and will represent the Trust as a member of the Estates Team. The post holder will be responsible for building and maintaining strong customer relationships with stakeholders.

  1. PLANNING & ORGANISATIONAL

The Apprentice will be required to organise work priorities and support colleagues.

  1. PHYSICAL SKILLS

The Apprentice will be required to be confident and competent and possess good practical skills in order to support the team and develop their skills.

  1. RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENT

The Apprentice will have incidental patient contacts.

  1. RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY

The Apprentice will follow policies and procedures in their role as part of the Estates Team which are determined by the manager of the team and may be asked to comment on policies, procedures, and possible developments.

  1. FINANCIAL & PHYSICAL RESOURCES

The Apprentice will be responsible for safekeeping Trust property and assets such as tools and equipment.

  1. HUMAN RESOURCES

The Apprentice will not be responsible for any staff or workers and will be expected to work as part of a team and under direction.

  1. INFORMATION RESOURCES

The Apprentice will be responsible for the control and management of estates related information appropriate to the task being undertaken.

  1. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

The Apprentice will audit their own work to ensure they are recording and logging the appropriate information whilst adhering to the Trusts Information Governance policies.

  1. PHYSICAL EFFORT

There will be a mixture of sitting, standing, climbing, walking, and carrying required for this role.

  1. MENTAL EFFORT

Given the physical nature of work and working within safe systems of work and standard operating practices, there is a frequent requirement for diligence and concentration to avoid mistakes and accidents. The work pattern will generally be predicable with few competing demands given the nature of work.

  1. EMOTIONAL EFFORT

May occasionally witness distressing or emotional issues due to working in the hospital setting.

  1. WORKING CONDITIONS

Occasional working in dirty or cramped conditions with use of tools and equipment and substances covered by COSSHH regulations.

  1. ADDITIONAL KEY RESULT AREAS

The Apprentice will be expected to uphold the Trusts Purpose, Vision, and Values:
