Job summary

This will be a full time Clinical Research Fellow position based at Dorset County Hospital with research support from Southampton. The post will provide development of research/clinical trial skills as well as Ophthalmic specialty skills. Cataract surgical skills can be offered to suitable candidate.

Main duties of the job

The Fellow would be expected to have research and clinical commitments mainly at Dorset County Hospital (2.0 days research, 3.0 days clinical activities) with the research component being shared with Southampton (Wednesday or Friday). The timetable would also be tailored to reflect the prospective Fellow's Personal Development Plan for research. They will be supported to develop both clinical and examination skills as well as further training in advanced OCT Imaging. They will be encouraged to come up with original clinical research ideas, prepare abstracts, publish papers and present at regional, national and international conferences (Pharma will be approached for sponsorship). They will work closely with the research teams at Dorset County (supervised by Mr Goverdhan) and Southampton (Prof Lotery) in recruitment and completion of ongoing research and portfolio clinical trials (TELESCOPE AMD study, AMD Complement inhibition study, etc).

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Medical Degree (MBBS, MChB or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration and a license to practice is required
  • Postgraduate training in Ophthalmology
  • FRCS or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • At least 3 years clinical experience in Ophthalmology
  • Evidence of good oral and written communication skills

Desirable

  • Sub-specialist interest
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working.
  • Ideally at least 1 year clinical experience in UK
  • Evidence of working independently.

Skills, Abilities& Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multi-professional and team basis with all levels of staff
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies

Audit

Essential

  • Knowledge of medical and clinical audit principles and evidence of direct involvement in 2 specific medical audits in the last 18 months.
