Job summary

An exciting new secondment opportunity has arisen at Dorset County Hospital and we a seeking a keen, enthusiastic and self-starting individual with a clinical background (AHP, medical or nursing) to lead on a project to embed identified 'Active Hospital' workstreams here at Dorset County Hospital. Active Hospitals aims to change the physical activity culture within hospitals to encourage patients and staff to move more.

We are able to fund this post through a grant application from NHS charities together. The funds were allocated in recognition of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted Dorset communities, exacerbating health inequalities & disproportionally affecting certain groups. The project will address health & wellbeing needs of populations who live in most deprivation. This programme will seek to support these individuals and the wider population to make better health decisions, helping them to manage their conditions, live healthier lives and reduce the need for NHS intervention.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this project aims to embed an 'Active Hospital' approach across the trust. Starting with some identified key services, we would like to spread and embed physical activity into our clinical and staff services to improve the health and wellbeing of the population we serve and are part of. This programme's key focus is ensuring that health inequalities are addressed and are the lens through which the project of embedding physical activity is approached.

Some examples of workstreams might include:

  • Embedding staff training to improve confidence in having physical activity conversations with patients with particular long-term conditions
  • Identifying populations who may benefit from financial help to access activity
  • Working with a whole family to ensure children and young people have access to physical activity
  • Providing opportunity for staff to take physical activity and understanding and overcoming the barriers that might prevent this

This initiative will be delivered collaboratively with local Councils, community groups who promote and enable physical activity such as gardening, walking, exercise, hobby and arts and crafts, Dorset CCG, Active Dorset and Public Health Dorset. And it will be a key role of this post to make those connections.

About us

You will be supported in this role by a 0.4wte project support post and will be given additional guidance from a steering group. The programme will also be supported by Active Dorset who are a key partner in this project. There is also a small budget that you will need to manage, which is to be used as an enabler to physical activity.
