This is a great opportunity for an experienced physician associate to work to develop the PA role within the Trust workforce. The post is a 12 month fixed term role funded by Wessex Cancer Alliance.
This post, within the Colorectal Team has been created to support ongoing development of cancer care within the service working with the multi-disciplinary clinical team to impact patient care across the colorectal pathway.
The post holder will develop to become a key member of the Colorectal MDT with the expectation they will support the 2 week wait pathway, in-patient care, administrative processes, out-patient clinics and patient care and procedures working within the framework of the scope of professional practice
The post holder can expect a weekly review with a mentor and clinical supervision from a nominated Consultant together with a quarterly review involving colleagues from Wessex Cancer Alliance in order to identify and support departmental and personal objectives.
Main duties of the job
With appropriate training and supervision, the PA will support the Colorectal service by working in the following areas:
- Working as part of a multidisciplinary team on the inpatient ward offering enhanced recovery support to the patients and ward staff following elective surgery for colorectal cancer.
- Triage of the 2 week wait referrals for colorectal cancer, following local/national guidance and referring for tests.
- In an outpatient setting clinically assess and examine patients referred with suspected colorectal cancer following referral along the NG12 NICE criteria, order appropriate investigations, interpret investigation findings, recommend, and discuss ongoing investigations with the patient as necessary.
- With training and support, perform outpatient rigid sigmoidoscopy/proctoscopy.
- Working collaboratively with the Colorectal Specialist nursing team to help to run the remote monitoring for the follow up of colorectal cancer patients the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of patient care.
