Job summary

Kingston and Richmond l NHS Foundation Trust is based in a beautiful and historic part of the country about 12 miles from the centre of London with good transport links into the capital. It lies very close to Richmond Park, the River Thames and is close to Hampton Court Palace and Kempton Park. The hospital supports around 350,000 people in the surrounding area from the boroughs of Kingston, Richmond, Roehampton, Putney, Merton and East Elmbridge.

We have approximately 520 beds and directly employ around 2,700 staff, with another 300 staff employed by contractors but working on behalf of the Trust.

We have a 12-14 bedded Intensive care Unit caring for patients requiring level 2 and 3 support.

You must be registered with the GMC. As a minimum, you will be required to have at least 2 years postgraduate training, or equivalent, in anaesthetic specialty training, or you must be able to demonstrate achievement of the necessary equivalent competencies. Previous experience of obstetric anaesthesia and ITU is desirable. You should also have current ALS provider status or equivalent certification. This is a 6-month post in the department of Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine to start as soon as possible. It may be extendable to a year if vacancies arise at a later date.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary and Duties:This is a 6-month post in the department of Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine, suitable for someone with a minimum experience of 2 years in Anaesthetics. It may be extendable should vacancies arise at a later date.

General Anaesthesia

Experience of elective and emergency surgery for ASA 1-4 patients including obese, frail and elderly patients.

Opportunity to run lists independently with a consultant as mentor.

Paediatric experience for children aged five and over.

Experience of TIVA.

Regional Anaesthesia

Training in ultrasound guided regional techniques including upper and lower limb, chest wall and abdominal blocks

Perioperative Medicine

Access to pre-operative anaesthetic assessment clinics and opportunity to develop skills related to peri-operative medicine.

Obstetric anaesthesia

Experience in obstetrics including management of ASA 3 parturients. Opportunity to be involved in quality improvement and research projects.

Resuscitation and transfer

Experience as part of the adult medical emergency team and involvement in intra-hospital transfers. Also resuscitation and stabilisation of sick paediatric patients prior to transfer.

Intensive Care

Review of critically ill patients on the ICU and review ward referrals.

Co-ordinate investigations, specialty referrals and documentation

Insertion of invasive lines

Active involvement in M&M meetings, teaching and audit/QIP

About us

This post will include on-call responsibilities participating in a 1 in 8 full shift pattern that is compliant with the European Working Time Directive and includes prospective cover. You will cover Theatre, Obstetrics or ITU. The rota has 4 tiers, covering theatre, obstetrics and 2 for ITU (one of whom must have airway training).The post is based entirely at Kingston Hospital. Most surgical specialties are covered, except for neuro and cardiac surgery. We have 8 main theatres and 4 theatres in our Day Surgery Unit. ITU currently run to 16 beds. In addition, our maternity department is very busy with nearly 6000 deliveries annually and we have a strong reputation in providing excellent training in obstetric anaesthesia. There is ample opportunity to attend pre-op assessment clinics and acute pain rounds. Involvement in QIPs is encouraged.We understand that Trust Doctors come to us with different levels of experience, often gained in different countries, and we aim to fulfil their educational and career progression needs by supporting training and professional development. All Trust Doctors are assigned a mentor from the department, similar to the role of educational supervisor.
