Job summary

Band 5 Claims Handler

The post-holder will work in a team handling all the claims received by the Trust. You will liaise with staff at all levels of the organisation, and be the key point of contact with NHS Resolution, to undertake claims investigations.

We are looking for someone with the relevant experience, excellent attention to detail and good communication skills. You will need to be extremely well organised with strong administrative skills and a track record demonstrating an ability to deal with staff at all levels. You will be able to work to tight deadlines and juggle a busy caseload, working largely autonomously.

The post-holder will report directly to the Head of Legal Claims, and will undertake other peripheral legal administrative work as required.

Main duties of the job

  • To receive all new legal claims (clinical negligence, employers and public liability) and ensure they are acknowledged and recorded in accordance with the Trust's procedure.
  • To report and administer claims in accordance with NHS Resolution's Existing Liability Scheme, Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts, Property Expenses and Liabilities to Third Parties Schemes.
  • To collect the preliminary information required to determine liability, and to investigate as required for ongoing claims management.
  • To ensure the Trust complies with set timescales in, but not limited to, the General Data Protection Regulations, Civil Procedure Rules, and the Coroners and Justice Act, and to escalate to the Head of Legal Claims where necessary if this cannot be achieved.
  • To audit litigation and claims activity bringing themes and relevant information to the attention of the Claims and Inquests Manager.
  • To co-ordinate and manage the Mental Health Act administration as per Trust protocols and procedures.
  • To assist the Head of Legal Claims in the robust gathering of evidence of learning from claims.
