Job summary

Welcome Payment

This post is eligible for the Trust 'Welcome to NELFT' Payment, a lump sum of 10% of agreed basic salary (pro rata if part time and exclusive of HCAS payments) (subject to a minimum of £4,000 and maximum of £10,000) and is open to all new applicants who are successfully appointed. Payment of the incentive is 50% of the lump sum at the end of the probationary period (typically six months) and then 50% at the end of year two. This welcome package is applicable to external candidates only.

Main duties of the job

  1. Be responsible for supervision and co-ordination of students and assistants on a daily basis
  2. Ensure that your own practice and that of staff under your supervision meet the required professional standards of speech and language therapy practice
  3. Deputise for the Speech and Language Clinical Lead in their absence, taking responsibility for the operational management of the team, allocating and organising the work of junior and assistant staff to meet service priorities on a daily basis
  4. To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and service user priorities. Readjusting plans as situation change/arise
  5. To employ appropriate strategies to manage aggressive behaviour within the workplace
  6. To be aware of, and respect the right to service user choice and dignity, and promote the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy
  7. To be aware of and comply with the Trust's policies e.g. Risk Management, Fire Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum payment of £5,436 per annum pro rata).

Job Purpose:

Aim of the role:

The post holder will be expected to support their team, department and organisation to achieve the Trusts Values in their day-to-day work. These are the 5Ps:

The post holder will achieve this by providing a high standard speech and language therapy service to clients with a Learning Disability in Waltham Forest.

To perform advanced speech and language therapy assessments of clients with diverse presentations and complex conditions and to provide a clinical diagnosis and develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.

To hold responsibility for his or her own caseload and be responsible for a defined area of the service, working without direct supervision. Clinical supervision takes the form of regular meetings to review, reflect upon casework and the development of the service and identify specific training needs. This is provided by the SLT clinical lead within the team who will also be a point of access for advice and support.

To undertake all aspect of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

To supervise, educate and assess the performance of speech and language therapy students.

To participate in evidence-based audit and research projects to further own and the teams clinical practice.

To make recommendations to clinical lead/manager of service for changes to practice by the team. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service protocols.

Clinical Skills
  1. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of service users in your care
  2. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of service users including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; use advanced clinical reasoning, standardised and non standardised objective assessment techniques to provide and accurate diagnosis of their condition and needs both personal and environmental.
  3. To formulate and deliver an individual speech and language therapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills and other alternative options.
  4. To take delegated responsibility from the Speech and Language Clinical lead for managing service users with particular conditions and be responsible for providing specialist speech and language therapy assessment and treatment plans for service users with these conditions
  5. To formulate accurate prognosis and recommend the best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans
  6. To write reports reflecting specialist knowledge, ensuring copies are sent to the service user/carer and involved professionals/ agencies in line with Trust guidance on consent and confidentiality.
  7. Access service users/carers understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with service users who lack capacity to consent and confidentiality
  8. To ensure that service users/carers families are involved in decision making and the planning of care plans
  9. To employ excellent communication and interpersonal skills and use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate complex condition related information effectively to impaired service users and to carers to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include use of interpreters, and co-working with bilingual SLT Assistance/colleagues to enable service users whose first language is not English to access the service.
  10. To evaluate service users progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required
  11. To manage clinical risk within own service user caseload.
  12. Work within trust clinical guidelines and professional guidelines and to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards. Monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

  14. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive service user treatment records in line with professional standards of practice.

This will include discussion of service user care, progress and involvement in discharge planning.
  16. To provide advice and/or training to others regarding the management and care of service users with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties

  20. To demonstrate skills in risk management of service users, taking into account the safety of staff/public.
  21. To maintain intense concentration in all aspects of service user management for prolonged periods. In particular, to monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of service users communication, adapting and facilitating according to perceived service user needs including cultural and linguistic difficulties
  22. To demonstrate the ability to manage adults with challenging behaviours, including the application of appropriate management strategies agreed by an MDT approach.
