Lead Pharmacist – Adult Mental Health

Job summary

We are seeking a motivated candidate with mental health experience for this role, to support the management of patients across North East London to optimise medicines use in a holistic way. This role will have a high degree of autonomy and be responsible for providing expert leadership and knowledge across the health and care systems, as well as through national and international networks.

A Consultant Pharmacist position has already been accredited by RPS for this position for the successful post holder to work towards as part of their development.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate for this post will be supported as a progression role (Band 8b to Band 8c) to work towards Consultant Pharmacist credentialing as set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

The post holder will work closely with the Deputy Medical Director and the other professional and operational leads across the Trust. The post holder will have professional and managerial accountability to the Chief Pharmacist.

NELFT will have a total of three Consultant Pharmacist positions, and we are really excited about the opportunities for peer support, networking and collaboration between the post holders - allowing us to deliver cutting edge of clinical practice, leadership and research.

Job responsibilities

The aim of this post is to be the lead and expert pharmacist for the trusts adult Mental Health Services. This role will provide a dynamic link between clinical practice, research, leadership and service development by delivering patient care to ensure the best experience and outcomes for patients from their medicines whenever and wherever their care is delivered.

The role will have a system focus to improve the lives of people in mental health services across the East London and Healthcare Partnership (ELCHP), and be actively involved in the mental health transformation programme.

The post holder will achieve this by:

  • Working to optimise patient outcomes from their medicines within adult MH care pathways across sectors and healthcare boundaries right across the relevant STPs/ICS where NELFT provide services.
  • Strategically leading and co-ordinating the pharmacy team in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient pharmacy and medicines optimisation service to Adult MHS, in accordance with local and national standards and strategy.
  • Working to improve health outcomes for patients using a holistic approach to care, ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines through provision of medicines-related aspects of patient care.
  • Engaging with patients in adult MHSs to improve their experience of medicines, ensuring their voices are heard and integral to any decisions made about their care.
  • Promoting improvements in quality, safety and cost effectiveness of medicines use and supporting holistic management of clinical conditions, influencing the wider community of practice.
  • Ensuring systems and processes are in place for training and supervising all pharmacy staff providing medicines service to adult MHSs to ensure that they are suitably trained and competent for their role.
  • Progressing towards Consultant Pharmacist credentialing through the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)

Key Responsibilities

  • To demonstrate and maintain clinical knowledge and expertise in the use of medicines in adult MHs and to develop particular areas of interest as appropriate and relevant to the substantive role and in accordance with the organisation and medicines optimisation strategy.

  • To act as a role model and inspiring others to excel in clinical pharmacy practice in mental health both within the pharmacy department and beyond.
  • To tutor and supervise pharmacists working in MH including those undertaking foundation, ACP or NMP training in order to ensure a robust, competent and highly skilled workforce
