Job summary
A six month fixed term vacancy has arisen for an experienced Deputy Payroll Manager to join our Trust's busy and friendly Payroll Team, which is based at our Mount Vernon Hospital site.
The post holder will be responsible for supervising the Payroll Team in the provision of an efficient and accurate payroll, expenses, and pension service to the Trust for approximately 4,000 monthly and weekly paid staff.
The post holder will deputise for the Payroll Manager and will help to run the Trust's weekly and monthly payrolls, as well as work on payroll projects.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication and numeracy skills and be organised and conscientious, with an ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
The role requires extensive knowledge and experience of all aspects of payroll, NHS and local terms and conditions, employment policies, statutory regulations, and system processing using the Electronic Staff Record.

Main duties of the job
- Responsible for ensuring procedures are in place for payroll data to be processed correctly, in line with national and local pay rates and using both speed and accuracy to ensure that all data has been updated on the ESR system in order to meet payroll deadlines.
- Being aware of the effective dates for pay awards and rate increases and checking that the appropriate instructions have been obtained and that employee records have been updated correctly and on time.
- Checking and authorising calculations for variations of pay, arrears payments, manual corrections and overpayments.
- Processing and input of payroll data to the ESR system by the verification, analysis and application of data covering: Annual salaries, hourly rates, enhanced rates, additional hours, increases for increments, pay awards and promotions, timesheets, data interfaces and travel and expenses payments.
- Ensuring that department procedures are adhered to, queries have been dealt with efficiently and promptly, and that central functions (e.g. department post, stationary and secure storage) are covered by the payroll team.
- Authorising manual payments by cheque or chaps where appropriate.
- To be responsible for producing the weekly and monthly payrun, including running all system processes (e.g. increment updates, retro payments, prepayment exceptions, Tax and NI aggregation, standard and adhoc exception reports and generating outputs and files for BACS, costing, ledger interface and payslips etc ),
