Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic Audiologist to work in our friendly Audiology Department at Hillingdon Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospitals. We serve the population of London Borough of Hillingdon providing a full Audiology Service using Audiometric, behavioural and objective forms of testing and NHS digital hearing aids.This is an opportunity to gain further experience in Audiology and would involve diagnostic assessment and auditory rehabilitation. Applicants should be able to work without direct supervision, using their own initiative and have the ambition to move readily with change.We invite applicants with education in Audiology at least to a university degree level. Masters degree in Audiology is desirable. You must be registered with HCPC or RCCP.
Main duties of the job
You will be expected to undertake all routine audiological and rehabilitation procedures, including direct referrals for hearing aids and open access from GPs.
Ensure provision of a comprehensive service to patients referred to the department from GPs and consultants including the provision of the full range of NHS aids.
Undertake ENT outpatient clinics at Hillingdon and Mount Vernon Hospitals supporting the Consultant ENT surgeons.
Assist with the clinical supervision of students.
Keep updated with professional knowledge and new technology.
About us
The post is based in Adult Audiology but we have a close relationship with the Paediatric Audiology, the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme team and the Child Development Centre which are all based on site.We are an NHS Modernisation Hearing Aid Service site, a third wave NHS Modernisation of Children Hearing Aid Service site and a second wave Newborn Hearing Screening Programme site and there is a close working relationship with the education services.
In the very near future there are plans for the Adult Audiology team to move into updated modernised facilities on the Hillingdon Hospital grounds, making this a very exciting time to join our team.

Clinical
- To take a medical case history to exclude pathologies that require a medical opinion, and informs which audiometric tests are appropriate.
- To safely and accurately undertake appropriate test regimes for school age children and adults with hearing disorders including direct referrals from GPs.
- To analyse and interpret test results.
- To provide appropriate reports for clinicians and GPs.
- To provide recommendations as appropriate with respect to further patient management.
- To provide re/habilitation of adults with hearing disorders including care planning and specialist advice including complex cases.
- Use medical, physical, social and audiological assessment information to assess the appropriate ear mould.
- Taking impressions of ears and adjusting or altering ear moulds when required.
- Select appropriate hearing aids and prescription formulae based on the needs assessment and diagnostic test results.
- Accurately fit hearing aids using real-ear measurements.
- Instruct adults patients and significant others on use of hearing aid, providing relevant information.
- Counsel patients and significant other regarding the nature and extent of any hearing deficit in order to maximum benefit of device and other services available e.g. Hearing Therapy, Social Services, environmental aids, accessories.
- Carry out first line management of repair of hearing aids.
- To communicate test procedures and outcomes to patient and carers who have barriers to understanding e.g. degree of hearing loss, physiological causes, ethnicity, disability, special needs.
- Be responsible for ensuring the correct operation and use of all audiological equipment and facilities within his/her jurisdiction e.g. daily calibration and safety checks, decontamination.
- To utilise an integrated testing/patient management system, including the input of clinical data accurately e.g. patient journal.
- Carry out ward visits and hearing aid repairs for inpatients as required.
- Order stock and supplies as required.
- Share responsibility for the dispatch of ear moulds to manufacturer.

- Regularly travel between Hillingdon and Mount Vernon providing Audiology services at both sites.
- Lead/participate in organising in-house CPD training events.
- Identify own training and developmental needs.
- Participate in general departmental audit, research and development.
- Creating/updating patient information on website / intranet / patient literature
- Creating/conducting patient experience surveys
- Creating/updating letter/journal templates in Auditbase
- Responsible for supervision of Practitioner Training Programme students
- Give advice to staff in care homes and on the wards on the management of hearing aids for patients in their care.
- Occasionally give information talks on hearing impairments in the elderly for NVQ level 1 + 2 and other agencies such as the Social Services team and Hard of Hearing Clubs.
- To plan and prioritise own duties, clinics and administration.
- Understand the importance of confidentiality when dealing with patients and their details.
- To contribute to improvements on service policies and protocols.
- To be able to implement new procedures and make recommendations regarding the new procedures.
