Job summary

The Phlebotomy service is a developing service, and we are changing the way we work to ensure we are providing a service with high clinical standards and provide greater accessibility to patients. The phlebotomy service is a hub and spoke model, with the main Inpatient and Outpatient Hub on the North Middlesex University Hospital Site. There are three main community Hubs located in communities of Enfield and Haringey, there is also provision for a domiciliary service.

Working with the Outpatients Matron the post holder will promote and contribute to an agreed strategic direction for Phlebotomy that is in accordance with best practice and the needs of the Trust. The post holder will take line management responsibility for the Phlebotomy staff including the main reception help desk

Main duties of the job

To lead the phlebotomy services department team across all Trust sites and in doing so:

  • Act as a role model, demonstrating high levels of clinical expertise, and leading, managing and delivering individual patient care.
  • Proactively promote staff development ensuring its relevance to the practice area and individual needs.
  • Facilitate a learning environment for staff and students allocated to the area.
  • Managing staff and physical resources effectively.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will assist the Outpatients Matron to ensure the provision of the infrastructure, staffing, environmental and managed processes to enable the Trust to provide an efficient patient focused service to all patients.

Directly line manage the Phlebotomists and receptionists, providing effective support to all staff within the areas of responsibility, ensuring delegation of appropriate responsibility, consistent with effective decision making.

Support the Outpatient Matron on the development and embedding of a culture of patient-oriented, safe and efficient service delivery

Support the Outpatient Matron on recruitment, selection, induction, and retention of staff, ensuring compliance with Equal Opportunities with line management responsibility as appropriate.

Be conversant with all activities within the areas of responsibility and ensure adequate cover is provided in times of absence.

Support the Outpatient Matron with the monitoring of the usage of agency and bank staff and ensuring adequate phlebotomy cover is provided, at all times, whilst ensuring financial effectiveness of these bookings.

Ensure training is accessible to all staff, recognising the diverse needs of the workforce and liaising with HR and OD team members.

Support staff in the department in receiving appropriate training and ongoing development to enable them to fulfil their roles competently and safely. Ensure all staff is kept informed of relevant Divisional and Trust-wide issues and initiatives.

Provide visible leadership in a continuous quest for improving learning, performance, and quality, promoting a clear sense of direction within the department, fitting with the achievement of the Hospitals objectives and modernisation of services Promote an environment that encourages teamwork, maximises individuals potential and stimulates innovation.

Ensure all clinical practice meet the required clinical practice standard

Ensure all Phlebotomy Clinical and Nonclinical Standards of Operation are kept updated

Ensure the service is meeting the required infection control standards

Manage the three health rosters for phlebotomy

Manage the yearly competencies assessment for staff
