Job summary

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a junior doctor (FY2+) to develop their Paediatric Emergency Medicine skills, experience and knowledge through working in our busy Paediatric Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work on a dedicated Paediatric ED rota (which is self-rostered) and will gain experience and training in managing medically unwell children as well as injured children; the department is a busy Trauma Unit and part of the North East London Trauma Network. The successful applicant will be supported by a team of three Paediatric Emergency Medicine consultants and seventeen adult Emergency Medicine consultants. Consultant presence in the Paediatric ED is until 10pm each weekday and until 8pm on weekends. Registrar support is available 24 hours per day from Paediatric registrars and Adult ED registrars.

About us

The paediatric department is committed to training and education, and is recognised as one of the best training sites in London. The successful applicant will be encouraged to attend weekly paediatric teaching and regional Paediatric Emergency Medicine training days, and will also be expected to contribute to the provision of teaching to members of the multidisciplinary team. Our innovative 'ABC Parents' community outreach project provides education on basic child illnesses to local parents, and we enable junior paediatric ED doctors to support this project if they so wish.

The trust runs major resuscitation courses (APLS/EPLS/NLS/ALS/TILS) and has a newly refurbished simulation suite with an active ED simulation faculty. The department has a strong drive towards Quality Improvement and successful applicants will be encouraged to shape the future of the department through guideline and pathway development and project work, with supported training for this. The department is a member site of PERUKI (Paediatric Emergency Research in UK and Ireland), participating in national and international research projects. Applicants will be supported in developing an area of interest from these available opportunities.

In March 2017 the paediatric department was awarded an RCPCH regional award for best training site, as nominated by trainees. The Emergency department was awardedGoodin the CQC inspection in October 2019.
