Job summary

The department of General surgery is the largest surgical department at the hospital, incorporating the sub-specialty services of breast surgery, benign upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery and emergency General surgery.

The department is a national innovation site for enhanced recovery, providing shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery for patients. We also are one of the leading providers for hot gallbladder service in the country.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide registrar level cover on a rotational shift basis throughout General surgery.
  • Supervise the SHOs in service delivery, in outpatients, inpatients, and day services.
  • Provide a rapid response to A&E to facilitate the 4-hour trolley-wait target - during the on-call shift will be available solely for emergency duties.
  • Undertake outpatient clinics (Face to face, telephonic and virtual) and operating theatre lists as directed by the consultants.
  • Able to support the MDT (Colorectal/Breast)
  • Participate in the Clinical Governance and Risk Assessment process.
  • General Surgery training within the hospital.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Take part in the care of patients attending the department, including examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Liaise with staff of other departments.
  • Maintain legible records.
  • Assist in the audit of various aspects of work under the direction of the Audit lead.
  • Recognize their own limitations and seek advice from the Consultants in their management of patients.
  • Perform related duties as required, including additional duties arising exceptionally from occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, and duties essential for the continuity of patient care.
  • Other duties as directed by the Consultant in Charge.
  • IT skills are essential to support the electronic management of patient pathways.
  • Dept encourages all junior doctors to be involved in development of guidelines in partnership with other team members.

Essential

  • MBBS & MRCS
  • NHS experience
  • Holds full UK GMC registration and license to practice.

Desirable

  • Working towards a post- graduate qualification

Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience working in a General Surgery setting
  • Understand the structure and functional principles of the NHS
  • ATLS Certified and up to date

Desirable

  • NHS experience - Minimum 1 year
  • 6 months experience as registrar in General surgery
