Job summary
The Oncology Department at North Middlesex University Hospital serves a population that includes patients from West Essex and North and West Hertfordshire Clinical Commissioning Groups through PAH, and the majority of those living in Enfield and Haringey. 45% of new referrals come from the immediate location of Enfield and Haringey, with the remaining 55% attending from Essex and Hertfordshire.
We are looking to recruit a locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology for Breast and Lower GI malignancies for a period of 6 months (and can be extended subject to approval) based at North Middlesex Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital. We are seeking a highly motivated consultant colleague to provide excellent care to patients with a commitment to innovate service models, delivery of performance targets. This could possibly be extended with some changes in job plan subject to availability and approval with the view of exploring the possibility to converting to a substantive post. There is opportunity for additional lead role and educational supervisor role.
This post is for 9.5 Programmed Activities (PA), 8.0 DCC and 1.5 SPA. Candidate that wish to discuss about PA adjustments and flexibility or a possible full time post, are encouraged to discuss with the clinical director.

8.0 PAs are allocated for Direct Clinical Care time and 1.5 PAs are allocated to support professional activities shared between the two Trusts.`
Other Roles and ResponsibilitiesConsultants have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their department. They are expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinical departments.The appointee will be expected to take responsibility for maintaining their CPD.
Education and Training roleThe North Middlesex University Hospital has gained a reputation for teaching excellence in the region due to our dedicated consultant teachers and a rich variety of clinical cases.
Formal teaching sessions are organised differently in various departments and there will be opportunity to be involved in training and teaching sessions.
About us
North Middlesex University Hospital is a busy District General Hospital based in Edmonton, North London. We have a busy Oncology service for a number of tumour sites offers multiple sub-speciality inpatient and outpatient care.
The NMUH oncology department has played a major role in the provision of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy services to the North London Cancer Network for 75 years. It provides specialist expertise to the District General Hospitals at Princess Alexandra Hospitals (PAH) and Barnet / Chase Farm Hospitals (now part of Royal Free Group NHS Trust) for over 25 years through joint Consultant appointments, outreach MDTs and Joint clinics in keeping with the Cancer plan and working with local teams to provide accredited cancer services. A full Acute Oncology Service was implemented in 2014.

This post is for locum consultant in Clinical Oncology for Breast and Lower GI malignancies for a period of 6 months but this could possibly be extended with some changes in job plan subject to availability and approval. There is opportunity for additional lead role and educational supervisor role. There may be changes in the final PA allocation dependent on allocation of lead roles and to ensure sufficient SPA is met.
This is a replacement post following reconfiguration of services to support the expanding lung practices and to cover maternity leave. The successful candidate will join well-established lung practices at NMUH to provide Radiotherapy and Systemic treatment support and will be doing clinics alongside Medical Oncologists. There will be plenty of opportunity to get involved with SABR treatment planning and the successful candidates are actively encouraged to participate in radiotherapy peer review.
The successful candidate will also have opportunities to expand and develop the corresponding research portfolios and/or any other specialist interests.
The aim is to provide high quality and responsive cancer services for the local population and the post holder will be expected to contribute to further development of these services to deliver the highest quality of clinical care as part of the wider team of 16 Consultant Oncologists.
The following is not an exhaustive or exclusive list of the duties of the appointee. The appointee to this post is required to:
- Provide senior clinician services for AOS plus their corresponding tumour sites as per job plan or as agreed within the Trust, and as required when on call;
- Work with consultant colleagues and nursing staff to ensure efficient use of Trusts resources and contribute actively to clinical governance in the department and to development of quality enhancement projects in the unit;
- Provide senior clinician services to area of special interest as per the job plan or as agreed within the Trust;
- Show flexibility and undertake different appropriate clinical tasks within allocated DCC sessions at the request of the clinical manager, as the need arises;
- Actively participate in the Units teaching programme and undertake supervision, teaching and training of medical trainees and other multi-professional staff, in line with guidance from the relevant Royal Colleges or specialty bodies;
Actively participate in clinical governance for the department, e.g. guidelines development, audit and CPD.
