Job summary

As a member of the Phlebotomy team the post holder will undertake phlebotomy duties at NMUH, or community hubs such as The Laurel's Healthy Living Centre and other primary care sites as required and directed by phlebotomy management, in order to provide a 'fit-for-purpose' Phlebotomy service.

The successful candidate will be part of a team and will be based at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust and will work in OPD, on Wards; but, also in the GP practices in the community, as required. You must be willing to work cross site and at any associated outreach clinics within the Trust when required.

The shifts will usually be anything between hours 07:30-18:00 however these are subject to change depending on service needs.

The Phlebotomy team covers weekend duties on a rotational basis; therefore flexibility of the successful candidate is essential.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To take blood samples from hospital and General Practitioner patients by venepuncture, using the Vacutainer system, syringe and needle, butterfly technique or finger-prick according to the written protocol.

2. To ensure correct patient and sample identification.

3. To ensure samples are correctly labelled, put in the correct containers to reach the laboratory as required and within timelines.

4. To work as a member of the phlebotomy team at NMUH sites and at GP surgeries as required.

5. To co-operate fully with other staff to provide the most effective service

6. To perform Glucose Tolerance Tests when required.

7. After suitable training and experience to take blood samples from psychiatric patients.

8. To select appropriate puncture site to ensure the suitability of blood sample.

9. To ensure that your mandatory training is completed and up to date as per Trust policy and any other relevant core training and training that will enhance practice.

10. Responsible for the safe disposal of contaminated materials, including sharps

11. Responsible for monitoring and replenishing of medical stock.

12. Support members of staff in their orientation to the department and role.

13. Be aware of and participate in the reporting of any incidents using the online DATIX system / equivalentchannel.

14. Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to promote a cohesive clinic team and the achievement of team objectives.
