Job summary

The fracture clinic forms part of the outpatient's department and deals with both acute fractures and orthopaedic conditions.

Each consultant and their team have a specific morning or afternoon for their fracture clinic. There are daily clinics from Monday to Friday, for trauma patients who have been directly referred from the emergency department and in patient. We have a Matron and department Manager in post who are passionate and committed to the staff and improving patient experience.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for assessing individual patient care needs in relation to and developing, implementing, and evaluating plans of care for patients in accordance with agreed policies and professional guidelines. To provide a plastering service for the orthopedic wards, clinics, theatres, fracture clinics and Emergency Department. To work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. Perform cast applications and support in manipulations and reductions Assist nursing staff in Orthopaedic clinics Ensure that clinics run smoothly Resolve queries, requests and complaints in a polite manner Ensure patients understand the compliance with treatment/care plan Apply specialised knowledge and skills to ensure the optimal treatment outcome and minimise patient discomfort Manage patients with plaster problems when they return to the Plaster Room, making decisions to change the cast or not, and recognise medical conditions such as compartment syndrome, DVT Work in a safe and effective way to a high standard of care. Clinical Responsibilities

Directly involved with patient care in the plaster room, theatres, and wards. This will involve casting with plaster of Paris (POP) and synthetic materials.

Application/adjustments of splints and braces, wound care, removal of sutures, skin clips and percutaneous K-Wires. Also assisting the clinicians in direct treatment of the patient plan. Experience in thermoplastics is desirable but not essential.

To liaise with clinicians in assessing and ensuring that limbs are correctly positioned before, during and after the application of casts

To assess patients skin condition prior to the application and on removal of casts and related appliances also reporting to the clinician in charge if concerned.

Responsible for the assessment, planning. Delivery and evaluation of individual patient care, working in partnership with patients their carers and the multi-disciplinary team.

Formulate and deliver high quality care without direct supervision, seeking guidance on actions that are outside agreed defined standards.

Ensure patient safety is always maintained. Record and report adverse and potentially adverse events and assist with investigation of such events, ensuring learning is shared with the wider team(s)

Record information about patients in a safe, accurate and consistent manner using appropriate tools and techniques, including electronic and written formats as close to point of care as possible.

Utilise decision support tools and techniques to support the delivery of safe and effective care.

Make appropriate and timely referrals to members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies to ensure patients on-going physical, spiritual, emotional, and social needs are met.

Adhere to the organisations policy for handling, recording and safe keeping of patients valuables and possessions.

Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that encourage them to live healthily, and apply principles of self-care, utilising evidence based electronic and other information resources as appropriate.
