Job summary

Work with the current theatre practice educator to support new and current staff on scrubbing, whilst supporting all students and learners in all areas of theatre practice. An experienced, qualified professional required with excellent scrub skills and up to date knowledge in Trauma and Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Urology, Opthalmic and Emergency surgery. The post holder will have evidenced teaching experience in theatres.

The post holder will work clinically and support the management team to ensure the team are able to deliver safe, efficient, effective care to the patients.

Main duties of the job

Together with current practice educator work with all learners, new and qualified staff to ensure scrub competencies and all other competencies are met.

Ability to train and supervise all staff in all theatre processes to ensure compliance to all safety requirements.

Undertake audits to ensure required compliance met.

Work clinically as required.

Support senior team co-ordinating and theatres as required.

Work with practice educator to ensure staff meet all mandatory training requirements, and participate/organise training days as required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Be an expert clinical practitioner with 5 years theatres experience on the scrub site, multi-skilled in a variety of specialities. Able to prioritise and plan own workload to include working in clinical practice. Act as an expert resource for the multi-professional team.

Be a visible and accessible point of contact for staff, co-ordinating staff development across the theatre department

In conjunction with the other Practice Educators, ward/unit sisters /charge nurses act as a resource and advisor for the induction of new staff and their on-going development.

Lead in the development and advancement of evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.

Promote reflective practice and a culture of lifelong learning, using action learning sets, clinical supervision, eLearning, and other learning methodologies

Facilitate the development of rotational programs for newly qualified staff

Develop the concept of the expert mentor, recruit preceptors and maintain a register of these.

Participates in practice development initiatives in the Division to ensure practice meets external health care standards as required and creates a culture of best care best value.

Actively encourages and takes part in agreed audit /service evaluation projects. In conjunction with the Head of Nursing, Matrons and ward/unit staff ensures that audit recommendations are implemented and reviewed.

Be involved in the internal and external quality frameworks ensuring that evidence is available and accurate. Ensure that practice meets these quality agendas.

Ensure that newly qualified practitioners are aware of the quality and patient safety aspects of the care that they are delivering and that they act in a safe and knowledgeable way and only take on role and responsibilities that they have been trained and are competent to deliver.

Able to assess staff and students in a variety of scrub skills and support their learning and development.

Maintaining own skills by working clinically on the scrub side.

Working in partnership with Divisional ward/unit teams ensures the delivery of care is in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Leads motivate and develop effective project teams which work towards the agreed annual Professional Development work plan.

To influence the development of the service and facilitate the change process helping the team to be adaptable and flexible in their approach to change.

Ensure the continuing development education and training of staff for whom they are responsible. Complete action plans and follow ups for non-attendance /non-compliance.

Support the Team Leads and Theatre Managers in performance management.
