Job summary

We are very excited to invite applications for a newly created post of Consultant Haematologist with an interest in Red Cell Disorders and Transfusion. This joint post with UCLH provides an fantastic opportunity for two large network haemoglobinopathy centres to develop and share expertise.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join a team of dynamic and friendly Consultants to provide a full range of Clinical Haematology services at NMUH. Their specific focus at NMUH will be to help lead, develop, and promote a comprehensive red cell service. They will also work closely with a second co-lead red cell consultant to achieve this and this second red cell post is being current developed with a view to being soon advertised. The successful applicant will also take up the role of clinical lead for blood transfusion and will be well supported by an experienced Transfusion Practitioner in this position.

The post holder will take part in a weekly UCLH MDT. Their remit will include driving cross-site recruitment into clinical trials, and the appointee will participate in a dedicated Research Clinic at UCLH, focused on recruiting patients with red cell disorders from the regional haemoglobinopathy networks, into clinical trials based at UCLH and UCL. They will also take part in one other alternate weekly sub-speciality clinic, candidate. They would take part in attending at UCLH for 6 weeks per year, which would also include being on-call during that time.

About us

NMUH is a Network Specialist Centre for Haemoglobin Disorders, there is a large and still growing haemoglobin disorder practice. Around 650 patients with sickle cell disorders (including 300 children) and about 40 patients with major thalassaemia syndromes receive comprehensive care at NMUH, from a multidisciplinary team.

The team at NMUH has been offering direct support for patient management across parts of North Central London, especially Enfield and Barnet, for decades. NMUH has been recognised as one of the Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Teams (SHT). It is also part of the NCL HCC network. We run outreach clinics at Welwyn [paediatrics, all day clinics every 2 months]. Dr Roberts-Harewood offers a paediatric outreach service at Welwyn Garden City, undertaking trans-cranial Doppler stroke risk assessment scans as well as Annual Reviews three times a year.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath (Haematology) or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Core Medical Training; MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

  • Postgraduate degree Thesis

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical Training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT with broad experience in Clinical Haematology
  • Experience in: -Red cell disorders including sickle cell disease and thalassaemia syndromes -Haematological malignancies -Transfusion medicine
  • At least 3-6 months paediatric haematology experience included in training.

Desirable

  • 4 years supervised training in an approved training programme
