About us
The Oncology Department at NMUH is staffed by both medical and clinical oncology consultants and has played a major role in the provision of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy services to the North London Cancer Network for 75 years.
It provides specialist expertise to the District General Hospitalsat Princess Alexandra Hospitals (PAH) and Barnet / Chase Farm Hospital NHS Trust for over 25 years through joint Consultant appointments, outreach MDTs and Joint clinics in keeping with the Cancerplan and working with local teams to provide accredited cancer services. A full Acute Oncology Service was implemented in 2014.
A programme to provide a full IMRT and IGRT service has been implemented with the installation of a Varian Truebeam in 2013 and a second Truebeam in 2015. All appropriate H&N, urology and lungcases are treated with IMRT. Skin cancers are treated on a superficial radiotherapy machine Xstrahl 150 installed in 2012, or alternatively treated with electrons on the LINACs. Lung stereotactic radiotherapy went live in 2020.
The department benefits from having Palliative Care onsite with Macmillan nurses integrated into the oncology service and consultant-led palliative care ward rounds. Opened in January 2004 within the Oncology Department is a splendid Helen Rollason Cancer Care facility which provides counselling and holistic support for patients and their careers.
