Job summary
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) has an exciting opportunity within the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit to appoint one substantive full time (10 PAs) consultant surgeon. Preference will be given to candidates already working in a locum or substantive consultant position with a background in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Experience in micro, neuro and vascular surgery would be an advantage. The Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit at the RNOH was founded over 50 years ago and treats all aspects of surgical disorders of the peripheral nerve injury of the brachial and lumbo-sacral plexus including pain management and rehabilitation. The appointee would be expected to work closely with the three PNI surgeons and the multi-disciplinary team in the management of patients with peripheral nerve injury. The post is based predominantly at the Stanmore site, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake outpatient clinics at our Bolsover Street outpatient department in Central London. The candidate will participate in the on-call rota for the unit. All applicants for consultant posts must either be on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register. We are looking for an applicant who work well within a team and have relevant experience in the management of complex nerve anatomy. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in research, education and teaching.
Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the Business Unit, MDT and monthly meetings. They will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated by agreement across the department, including cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences as appropriate
The successful applicant will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit.
The post-holder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer prior to the commencement date of the appointment.
The job plan shall be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.
It shall include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfill the job plan and the objectives.
The post-holder will participate in the PNI on-call rota, currently a 1 in 4 frequency

The PNI Unit provides a highly respected elective service which is fed by referrals from all over the UK, from the Military Services and from over-seas. The Unit, the largest of its kind in the UK, provides a world-class and comprehensive emergency service for acute nerve injury, Brachial plexus trauma, iatrogenic nerve injuries and in tumours of peripheral nerves and has the largest world experience in this field. It has acquired the largest UK experience in the treatment of surgical disorders of peripheral nerves and in the treatment of the Obstetric brachial plexus palsy.
This service is a Consultant led service receiving acute and non-acute referrals, with a large proportion coming from other NHS Trusts.
The successful applicant will take a full part in dealing with the case-load of the PNI Unit.
