The spinal trust doctor role within the unit is split between outpatient clinics, operating theatre and supervising in-patient care. Spinal trust doctor will be exposed to a wide variety of spinal cases with an emphasis on complex and tertiary cases both in the outpatient and operating theatre setting.
The Service incorporates the Integrated Back Unit, the Spinal Deformity Unit and the Spinal Injury Unit. The Service has a long history dating back to 1954 and takes a wide range of patients of all ages. It is arguably the largest Unit of its kind within Europe, specialising in treating patients with a complex spinal conditions both congenital and acquired. The service has expanded considerably over recent years and provides unrivalled opportunities for research and development. It is well supported by junior medical staff and spinal fellows and also has an information technology facility, which allows both audit and clinical research to be undertaken.
The clinical service is run by a well organised, multi-disciplinary team, including 14 Spinal surgeons, 5 specialist nurses.
Teaching is inherent to the Trust's work and the specialist training provided across a range of disciplines is in great demand both in this country and abroad.

Postgraduate qualifications
Full registration with GMC FRCS
NTN in relevant surgical specialty Within 12 months of CCT date.
Experience in spinal surgery at registrar level. Already developed an interest in complex spinal surgery, some experience in spinal trauma surgery is also preferable. Research with higher degree ideally in relevant specialty, experience of MDT working
Evidence of good written and verbal communication skills, an understanding of the major risk factors for spinal surgery at a population level and at the level of the individual. Awareness of specific needs of spinal injury and spinal deformity patients and their carers, issues relating to service provision for spinal surgery patients in hospital and the community
Ability and enthusiasm to teach medical undergraduates and Allied Health Professionals Personal participation in audit
