Job summary

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) have a rare and exciting opportunity within our Sarcoma service to appoint one full time substantive Consultant surgeon.

As part of the London Sarcoma Service you will work collaboratively within a highly specialist multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive care and highly specialised surgical management of both bone and soft tissue sarcomas. In addition you will undertake audit, research and quality improvement work to ensure a robust evidence base for surgical procedures.

We are looking for an applicant who works well within a team and has the relevant experience in both the management of sarcoma, massive endoprostheses and metastatic disease. You will also have good communication skills and experience in multidisciplinary team working.

This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the largest sarcoma services in Europe which aims to enable a sustainable service which is well governed, prioritises patient experience and focuses on patient outcomes and research.

You must be fully registered with the GMC/GDC and hold a full License to Practise and be on the specialist register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at interview stage.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will:

  • Be on a full time 10 PA job plan, there will be 7.5 Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities sessions and 2.5 Supporting Programmed Activities (SPA). These will comprise of ward rounds, theatre sessions, planning meetings, procedures, MDTs outpatient clinic appointments and patient related administration.
  • Provide in-patient and out-patient medical, surgical and rehabilitation care to patients.
  • The unit has a commitment to uphold our teaching element. The appointed consultant will play their full part in continuing and extending teaching within the unit

The new Consultant is expected to have a varied range of clinical interests to compliment the skills of the existing consultant team in the department, the development of which will be supported.

About us

The unit aims to provide a tertiary service for patients with complex problems of the hip and knee which cannot be provided elsewhere. It will see patients with adverse or poor outcomes from elsewhere and offer a safe haven for disappointed patients. However by maintaining a routine orthopaedic practice for the local population, the surgeons will continue to provide excellent training for the surgeons of tomorrow.

The division also works with the bone infection service and operates in collaboration with the Royal Free microbiology/infectious diseases department. With a weekly MDT and consultant microbiology support on a daily basis.

There is a close working relationship between the specialist hip and knee unit, limb reconstruction and spinal Orthopaedic surgeons and infectious diseases physicians' coordinating the medical aspects of care. This service is dedicated to the investigation and treatment of patients with all aspects of bone and joint infection.

Professor Hart has established the metal on metal service, which aims to better understand the mechanism of failure of metal-on-metal hip replacements. This MDT has a multidisciplinary approach with consultants from the specialist hip and knee unit, arthroplasty practitioner team and radiology present and will discuss patients from the RNOH but will also discuss patients at the request of colleagues nationally.
