MT03 - Junior Clinical Fellow Intensive Care

Job summary

An opportunity exists to gain experience in Intensive Care Medicine in the setting of a large London teaching hospital. The Royal Free Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for Acute Liver failure, Liver transplantation, Hepatobiliary surgery, Vascular surgery and Infectious Diseases.

The posts are at CT1 /2 level and airway skills are not specifically required. These posts would be ideal for any candidate wishing to extend their experience in Intensive care medicine before applying for anaesthesia, medicine or surgical training. You will be well supported by our dedicated team of 26 ICU Consultants.

The Royal Free Hospital Intensive Care Unit is recognised for training at all levels of Intensive care. Educational supervision is provided and opportunities to attend ICU teaching programme. We suggest the continuation of a portfolio and preparation for post-graduate examinations. Non-clinical activities such as QI and Audit are also encouraged. We have a some posts which can include a non-clinical element such as teaching, liver medicine or involvement in ICU electronic patient record project.

Start Date will be from 5th August 2026 for either 6 or 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The Intensive Care department at the Royal Free is recognised by FICM for training in Intensive Care Medicine at all levels. In participating in the clinical activities on the ICU, the post holder will expand on his/her experience of:

Resuscitation of the sick patient

Communication with the multi-disciplinary team

Criteria for admission and discharge from critical care

An EBM approach to, and an application of care bundles, to the management of critically ill patients.

Recognition and management of the critically ill patient

Recognition and management of acute medical emergencies

Supporting the sick patient to prevent further deterioration and hence the need for admission to Intensive Care

Circulatory support, advanced respiratory support and renal replacement therapies

Practical procedures including arterial and venous cannulation, the use of ultrasound

The interpretation of complex monitoring used in intensive care

The management of patients following complex major surgery

Identification of patients who will benefit from Intensive Care

Management of complex ethical issues and the delivery of difficult news to relatives
