Band 8A Advanced Clinical Practitioner - Acute Oncology

Job summary

This is an exciting role for an advanced level practitioner to join our Acute Oncology Nursing team. The post holder will assist in the safe assessment, treatment, referral and discharge of oncology patients. The postholder will provide clinical nurse leadership at the Royal Free London to provide the delivery of a comprehensive acute oncology service working collaboratively with other members of the team.

The post holder will be expected to practice independently as a senior practitioner within a consultant-led team to review patients who attend with toxicity from their cancer treatment or who are unwell from their cancer. The postholder will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, communication skills, and clinical attributes, enabling him/her to provide expert clinical and professional support to other clinicians and staff. The postholder will share some managerial/ leadership responsibilities with the other band 8a team members. The postholder will be part of a team responsible for the 24 hour emergency phoneline for patients and Trust wide teaching about acute oncology.

The post will encompass all pillars of the ACP framework.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

o Provide the core ACP role which is to assess, diagnose and treat patients under appropriate supervision within the emergency department or SDEC setting.

o Integrate with the multi-professional team within and demonstrate effective multi-disciplinary team working.

o Participate in and/or lead clinical research which will guide practice developments.

o Ensure that Clinical Governance standards are fully met with annual involvement in QI/ Audit projects.

o Develop as a clinical leader and act as a positive role model.

o Deliver Trust wide teaching about neutropenic sepsis and MSCC and other aspects of acute oncology.

o Support junior nurses and doctors to manage patients who present to the acute oncology team.

o Contribute to the development of local guidelines and standards. Collaborate with the Clinical Lead for Acute Oncology and Consultant Nurse and identify and interpret (at local level) the priorities for delivery of acute oncology, co-ordinating service development and implementation across the Trust.
