We are a friendly and supportive paediatric department with a team of consultants dedicated to teaching. Our department recently won a PAFTA award for best paediatric training unit in London three times in recent years, including this year. Our patients come from diverse backgrounds and present with broad spectrum of pathologies, enhancing the training experience. Our junior doctors have high success rate in passing exams and high success rate in applying for training posts.
Main duties of the job
This post attracts a rota supplement of 50% of basic salary for all out of hours working completed, and as part of this you will be working 1:3 weekends and less than 48 hours per week on average. This includes time for other developmental activities such as quality improvement projects, audits, personal research etc. In addition, there are at least three hours of protected educational sessions per week.
Although not officially recognised training posts, these roles will provide all the same training opportunities, study leave entitlements, and supervision provided to training staff, and the Trust has a fantastic record for staffing being accepted from these posts onto National Training Programmes.
We also work closely with the community teams at St Michael's and St Anne's Hospital. The department runs on a split rota with a separate team of registrars and trainee's on the neonatal and paediatric units.
About us
Our Rainbow Ward is a 16 bedded ward looking after both short and longer stay children aged 0-16. The ward will provide care for all patients including those admitted with conditions such as diabetes, haematology, gastroenterology, and asthma and allergy conditions. One cubicle on the ward will remain empty at all times in order to accommodate oncology patients requiring admission to the unit in a timely manner should this be required.
Our Paediatric Assessment unit is a brand new 11 bedded unit attached to Paediatric Emergency Department. It is a 24-hour facility for the assessment and treatment of children of our community who require urgent care, as well as bedding up to 6 inpatients as required. The service provides fast track access for the review of Oncology and Haematology patients and has well established links with tertiary care centres in the surrounding area and boroughs.
We are based on the first floor within maternity building and have a 24 cot Neonatal Unit to provide care to critically unwell and premature babies. In addition to this we support caring for newborn babies by the mother's bedside within maternity on the postnatal ward. We work very closely with our maternity birthing center, labour ward and with different neonatal units within the London Neonatal Network for provision of specialist neonatal care, including surgery.
