JOB SUMMARY

Context

A Clinical Fellow post is available based in the National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) starting from October 2025 for 1 year. It is suitable for a clinical trainee with a nephrology background or a speciality relevant to amyloidosis who wishes to gain experience in the clinical condition or clinical research. The NAC forms part of the Centre for Amyloidosis and Acute Phase Proteins and is located at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The Centre maintains a longstanding high profile clinical and basic science research programme and serves as the national referral centre for patients with amyloidosis and inherited periodic fever (auto-inflammatory) syndromes http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine/amyloidosis.

Main purpose of the job

Amyloidosis is a multi-system disease that encompasses many specialties. The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the clinical services within the Centre (National Amyloidosis Centre) and will contribute to the clinical research program within the Centre. The post holder will have ample opportunity to join/develop research relevant to their interests including areas of existing research such as cardiac MRI scanning, proteomics, genetics, and clinical trials with novel agents in amyloidosis. The centre conducts a range of clinical trials in ATTR, AL and hereditary amyloidosis.

If the successful candidate is a SpR with a National Training Number (NTN) s/he should apply prospectively to the JRCPTB to discuss any educational or clinical credit which may be achieved from the post.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Participate in outpatient clinical commitments in the National Amyloidosis Centre to gain a unique understanding of amyloid-related diseases.

2. To work with other clinical fellows in the centre and provide appropriate clinical cross cover.

3. To manage and care for clinical trial patients with amyloidosis.

4. Other clinical duties will be agreed in consultation with the post holder. There are no on-call commitments as part of the role, but it may be possible for on-call commitments to be arranged if so desired by the post holder.

RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To join a programme of research in the field of amyloidosis relevant to the post holders interest that is in keeping with ongoing research at the NAC.

2. To undertake clinically-based research projects under the supervision of academic consultants at the centre and potentially record, analyse and write up the results.

3. To participate and be involved in clinical care of patients with amyloidosis on prospective clinical drug trials.

4. To submit research findings for publication to appropriate journals and attend and present findings at appropriate conferences.

5. To prepare progress reports on research for UCL and funding bodies as required.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

To contribute to the overall activities of the research team and Centre as required.

To attend meetings and lectures as scheduled within the Centre.

To undertake an amount of teaching in relation to subject area as requested.

To contribute to the induction and direction of other research staff and students as requested.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Infection Control

Infection control is everyones responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts Infection Prevention and Control Policies and procedures and the Health Act (2006) Code of Practice for the prevention and control healthcare associated infections and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the risk of Healthcare Associated infections.

To ensure that all relevant monitoring data and issues are provided to the Directorates Governance structures.

To ensure that all staff are released to attend infection control-related educational sessions and staff with specialist roles, e.g. link practitioners, are released to undertake their duties.
