Job summary

The successful candidates will contribute to the clinical care of patients with a wide range of hepatobiliary disorders through the triage and co-ordination of pancreatobiliary endoscopy referrals, including pre and post procedure management. The post-holders will work closely alongside HPB surgery and hepatology teams, as well as liaise with external referrers. There is the opportunity to attend up to 8 pancreatobiliary training endoscopy lists per week, performing ERCP and EUS under consultant supervision. The posts also offers experience in a range of other fluoroscopy-guided interventional endoscopy procedures, including enteral and colonic stent placement and jejunal feeding tube insertion. The appointees will be responsible for co-ordination of the weekly benign joint Royal Free/UCLH HPB multi-disciplinary team meeting. Depending upon their training needs and interests, there is the opportunity to gain further experience through attendance at weekly MDTs in liver transplantation, hepatobiliary malignancies and hepatology radiology and pathology meetings.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the role primarily relate to co-ordination and organisation of the PB endoscopy service including the vetting of internal and external referrals. Additionally, the SCF is responsible for running the weekly benign pancreatobiliary medicine MDT, which typically discuss over 40 complex pancreatobiliary cases each week. This includes involvement in the acute pancreatitis network, which is currently being established as a cross-site initiative with RFH HPB surgery and pancreatobiliary colleagues at UCLH. There are typically 10 pancreatobiliary endoscopy lists per week available for training featuring a range of ERCP and EUS procedures.

The successful candidate will be expected to work at a senior clinical fellow level within this team and will be required to work in the operating theatre, take part in daily ward rounds, assist in out-patient clinics, participate in MDT meetings, and perform other relevant work as directed by the Consultants. The post-holder will also be required to participate in the sub-specialty on-call rota for liver transplant (supported by a consultant).

This post is EWTD compliant and attracts a banding of 1A. It is not recognised by the Deanery for training, however, opportunities may be available for some of the post-holders to join the active postgraduate research programme within the department including, where appropriate, registration for a higher degree.

The Royal Free also runs simulator training courses in advanced laparoscopic surgery in addition to having an active clinical programme in minimally invasive surgery. The successful candidate will be encouraged to make use of all the post-graduate training facilities and the diverse range of management and clinically orientated courses.
