Job summary

The postholder will provide day to day support of on-going clinical trials and other studies. Their overall supervision will be directed by Prof Burns, but on a day-to-day basis they will work primarily with HIV and Vaccine clinical trial research teams. The postholder will be central to the effective running of the wider group. An exact breakdown of percentage time spent in different duties is impossible to given the fluctuating nature of clinic visits for clinical research however it is anticipated that the successful applicant will undertake 3-4 clinical trial clinics per week seeing patients participating in clinical trials as per trial protocol. Outside of these responsibilities it is expected that the post-holder will develop their own clinical research project as well as participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. If they do not already hold a higher degree then creating pilot data/fellowship application to register for a PHD would be encouraged. The clinical research project(s) should be within HIV/infectious diseases/STIs and related conditions and will be under the guidance and supervision of senior academic staff.

Main duties of the job

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Day to day support of on-going clinical trials and other studies.
  • Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Development of own clinical research projects.
  • Under Consultant supervision, to be responsible for the clinical care of patients attending the HIV/ID service including those participating in the clinical trials liaising with colleagues to ensure they receive the best standard of clinical care.
  • Participation in HIV/ID on call rota (optional & subject to experience).

About us

The HIV service provided by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is recognised as an international Centre of Excellence for HIV care. It serves the inpatient and outpatient needs of over 3000 people with HIV and has the largest cohort of women with HIV in the country. It has an inpatient HIV unit and runs specialist consultant-led clinics within the department including in viral hepatitis, TB, cardiology, renal disease, rheumatology, ageing and frailty, chronic fatigue, lipid disorders, AIN, gynaecology and psychiatry. For stable patients on medication e-clinics are in place, which are both Doctor and Nurse led. Care in all areas of medicine is increasingly being provided at a network level and the department is active in developing and strengthening links with our clinical colleagues across the North Central London Network. The HIV department has a dedicated research team and many patients are involved in clinical trials including those for new antivirals, primary HIV infections and questionnaire based studies.

More recently, the Royal Free has established a dedicated vaccine trial research team. This team successfully delivered on large scale Covid vaccine trials during the pandemic. The vaccine trials team have more large-scale vaccine trials (Phase 1 through to 3) about to open and others on the horizon. The post-holder will help support delivery and oversight of these trials.
