Job summary

We are excited to offer this combined research and clinical post with a focus on delivering research within our 50 bed Critical Care Service. Our service provides care for critically unwell patients in in the setting of our large London teaching hospital. Royal Free London is a tertiary referral centre for liver failure, liver transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, vascular surgery, nephrology, renal transplantation, infectious diseases and complex abdominal surgery.

We would welcome candidates from a wide variety of clinical backgrounds including Medicine, Hepatology, Anaesthesia, and Emergency medicine. Airway skills are not specifically required and therefore these posts would be ideal for any candidate wishing to extend their experience in critical care medicine. This post would be well suited to a senior trainee who is taking time out of programme from higher specialist training in order to focus on research and prepare for applications for higher degrees. You will be well supported by our dedicated team of Critical Care Consultants, and we will help you develop mentorship and support from colleagues in our academic partner UCL.

The Royal Free Hospital Critical Care Service is recognised for training at all levels of intensive care medicine. Educational supervision is provided and attendance at ICU teaching programme is expected. The duration of this post will be 12 months.

Start Date: 7th August 2024 onwards

Main duties of the job

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is an International leader in Enhanced Recovery for Liver transplantation. We are one of two national centres for Infectious Diseases of High Consequence, and one of seven National Liver Transplant Centres. In both waves of the COVID pandemic, we were amongst the best in the country for outcomes. We aspire to be National Leaders in Clinical research, being allied to UCL, the Liver Institute and the new Pears building development, home of the UCL Institute for Immunity and Transplantation.

The Royal Free Hospital has a total complement of 42 Intensive Care beds (mixed level 2 and level 3) an 8 bedded post anaesthesia care unit (PACU). All medical and surgical specialties, with exception of neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery and ECMO are covered. The Renal unit at the Royal Free provides services for the whole of the North Central sector. Tertiary specialist services include liver transplantation, hepatobiliary (HPB), plastic and vascular surgery. With the recent expansion and amalgamation of HPB services at the Royal Free Hospital, we are now one of the largest centres in Europe in terms of these surgical procedures.

The total throughput of patients is in excess of 1600 per year. Senior medical cover is provided by 24 Consultants, who provide a 24 hour service.
