Senior Clinical Fellow (s) in Intensive Care Medicine
We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Senior Clinical Fellow(s) who wishes to gain further experience of Intensive Care Medicine in the setting of a large London teaching hospital.
We would welcome candidates from a wide variety of clinical backgrounds including Medicine, Anaesthesia, and Emergency medicine. Airway skills are not specifically required and therefore these posts would be ideal for any candidate wishing to gain experience in Intensive care medicine and the recognition and management of the critically ill patient. Previous ICU experience is not required. You will be well supported by our dedicated team of 24 ICU Consultants.
We admit approximately 2,000 patients each year and senior medical cover is provided by 26 Consultants, who provide a 24-hour cover worked in blocks to provide continuity of care.
The post is for 6-12 months, commencing February 2024 and is based at the Royal Free Hospital site in Hampstead, London.
Start Date: August 2024 onwards.
Main duties of the job
The Intensive Care department at the Royal Free is recognised by FICM for training in Intensive Care Medicine at all levels. In participating in the clinical activities on the ICU, the post holder will expand on his/her experience of:
- Resuscitation of the sick patient
- Communication with the multi-disciplinary team
- Criteria for admission and discharge from critical care
- An EBM approach to, and an application of care bundles, to the management of critically ill patients.
- Recognition and management of the critically ill patient
- Recognition and management of acute medical emergencies
- Supporting the sick patient to prevent further deterioration and hence the need for admission to Intensive Care
- Circulatory support, advanced respiratory support and renal replacement therapies
- Practical procedures including arterial and venous cannulation, the use of ultrasound
- The interpretation of complex monitoring used in intensive care
- The management of patients following complex major surgery
- Identification of patients who will benefit from Intensive Care
- Management of complex ethical issues and the delivery of difficult news to relatives
