About us
The hospital has a long and proud history in the field of renal dialysis and transplantation. The first three kidney transplants at the Royal Free were done between 1959 and 1960, including the first non-sibling live donor transplant in the UK using an immune suppressant.
The Department of Nephrology & Transplantation was established in 1966. The current ward configuration is two 28 bed wards and shared space in a dedicated 24 hr stay surgery ward and a procedures ward.
The department performs over 120 renal transplants per annum and manages around 1450 kidney transplant maintenance patients. The laparoscopic donor nephrectomy program for living donors started in 2005, with around 30 live donor transplants performed per year. There is a robot assisted renal transplant program, which commenced in December 2016. There are a few patients each year who receive combined liver and kidney transplants, as well as local options for islet or islet after kidney transplantation. There are strong links with the Royal Free and UCH urology departments.
The dialysis program manages c. 800 haemodialysis patients in 4 dialysis centres. The peritoneal dialysis program consists of around 190 patients. Renal surgery outpatient clinics are held in the Kidney and Urology Centre and in satellite hospitals. They currently comprise dialysis access clinics, transplant pre-assessment, live donor assessment, acute transplant follow up, transplant consent clinic and a transplant urology clinic.
