Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our renowned infection service as a substantive consultant covering microbiology and virology at Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals. The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and busiest Trusts in London with a well-established national and international reputation for clinical excellence and world class care. In addition to the core infection service at Barnet and Chase Farm, the Trust runs a number of specialist infection services (some based at the Royal Free Hospital) including:
- HIV (including the Ian Charleson Day Unit)
- Infectious diseases
- High-level isolation unit (national lead Contact HCID receiving centre at RFH)
- Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy
- Transplant virology
- Bone infection (outreach to Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital)

Main duties of the job
- Share in the provision of a clinical and diagnostic service to the Trust at the Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals.
- Participate in the clinical duties of the Barnet and Chase Farm Microbiology department with the other consultants on a pro-rata basis.
- Support infection prevention & control and antimicrobial stewardship activities on the Barnet and Chase Farm sites.
- Participate in teaching of other junior trainees, medical students and hospital staff as appropriate.
- Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
- Participate in laboratory and clinical audit.
- Participate in service development and policy review.
- Participate in CPD and quality assurance activity including annual appraisal and revalidation.
- Share in the assessment and introduction of new laboratory methods and in planning staff and equipment requirements.

Job responsibilities
Involvement in Directorate and Trust wide committees such as Clinical Governance and Drugs and Therapeutics may be required at times. Harmonisation has occurred across all Trust sites of Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial policies.
Some roles and responsibilities will change depending on the experience and interests of the appointee. A job plan must be agreed between the successful appointee and clinical lead in accordance with Schedule 3 of the Terms and Conditions Consultants (England) 2003.
- Share in the provision of a clinical and diagnostic service to the Trust at the Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals. The job is based at the acute site Barnet Hospital. The majority of workload is drawn from Barnet Hospital. The Chase Farm hospital site is mainly outpatient and elective surgery services with clinical advice usually provided when required by telephone. Attendance on the Chase Farm site will occasionally be required for Infection Control matters.
- Participate in the clinical duties of the Barnet and Chase Farm Microbiology department with the other consultants on a pro-rata basis, with shared cover for colleagues annual and study leave. Examples of duties could include: authorising Microbiology and Virology laboratory results, participation in clinical and laboratory meetings, provision of clinical advice (via telephone, ward consults, ward rounds and MDTs), participation in the clinical ward based service on a rotational basis with the other consultants, involvement in diabetic foot MDT clinics and antimicrobial and chronic infection ward rounds and the OPAT clinic.
