Job summary

At Barnet Hospital, part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, we are seeking to appointanenthusiastic and quality driven consultant to expand our well-established team. Main duties of the job

The Department of Health Services for Elderly People (HSEP) is a large, 22-consultant strong, vibrant, and dynamic department which provides specialist geriatric assessment and treatment to frail, older patients from the front door to discharge as well as support frail, older people in the community. We are committed to providing specialist geriatric expertise throughout the patient journey.

About us

The consultant appointed to this post will provide consultant input to a large acute geriatrics ward, and also support our hot floor, where we have an adult assessment unit and a hot clinic, enabling us to carry out comprehensive geriatric assessments as part of our same day emergency care service. The postholder will also be involved in our expanding virtual pathways, enabling us to care for a growing cohort of patients in virtual wards in the community. The appointee will also be on the general medical on-call rota.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will join a team of highly motivated physicians with a variety of speciality interests within geriatric medicine. The Department plays a pivotal role in developing frailty services and admissions avoidance schemes. We also provide a number of specialty clinics including Falls, Parkinsons disease, Continence and Tilt table clinics. The Acute Stroke Unit is run by four geriatricians with an interest in Stroke also providing daily TIA clinics. We have a well-developed Orthogeriatric service as well as surgical and cardiology liaison.

These posts will provide a unique opportunity to develop the expanding field of Geriatric Medicine and support an enthusiastic cohort of junior doctors and use quality improvement methodology to develop and discover measurable, sustainable improvements.

The appointee will be expected to be involved in all aspects of postgraduate and undergraduate training, including educational supervision, formal and informal teaching and leading the undergraduate teaching and assessment programme.

Medical students from University College Medical School are attached to the hospital during term time. Cohorts of Physicians Associate Students rotate through our unit, and we are supportive of Advanced Care Practitioner roles within acute areas.
