Physician's Assistant (Band 4) Maternity Services
This is an innovative role within our department. The post aims to release medical and midwifery staff to complete specialist tasks leaving the more general tasks to competent assistants. You can expect to be doing administrative and clinical tasks including phlebotomy and cannulation and you will need to be able to manage your own working day with minimal supervision.
You will mainly be based on 5 South but may be required to assist in any location within maternity clinical areas.

Main duties of the job
The physician's assistant supports the midwifery and medical staff within all areas of the maternity services performing a mixture of clinical and administrative tasks which release the professional workforce to perform more enhanced skills. The role is flexible in work pattern and will require an element of out of hours working.
You will be a key member of the improvement team, using your knowledge and experience to improve patient pathways. For this reason, the position will require the ability to organise your time efficiently and prioritise effectively. You will have the opportunity to influence policies and procedures in the areas in which you work.
You will take responsibility for the outstanding jobs list, using your own judgement and initiative to prioritise and ensure completion of the most important jobs. You will be supported by the consultant obstetrician on call and maternity matron in this area.
You will use the Cerner Electronic Patient Record System (EPR) and other patient information systems in your daily work and will need to demonstrate IT literacy.
You will need an awareness of the limits of your role and the boundaries within which you will be expected to work such that you do not exceed your level of competency inappropriately.

This post is part of the improvement work undertaken in the department to increase the quality of care for women and babies within a safe environment.
- The post holder will use their experience of the various processes involved in assessing women during pregnancy and birth and the postnatal period, ordering, chasing and obtaining test results to generate ideas for ways to improve these processes, and will take responsibility for implementing improvements in all the areas in which you work.
- Be responsible for the ordering, chasing and communication of results from all investigations as requested by the junior doctors, registrars, consultant paediatricians and midwifery staff.
- Inform clinical staff of the results of all investigations. Make necessary efforts to obtain these results and inform clinical staff where delays in obtaining results are likely to occur.

This list details the work outstanding on women and birthing people who have been discharged home. The post holder will take responsibility for monitoring, updating and action against the outstanding jobs list, reporting daily to the obstetrician on call and midwife-in charge.
- Responsible for ensuring all doctors discharge summaries are completed on the day of discharge.
- Completion of maternal transfer and newborn transfer summaries and ensure that appropriate documentation and communication between the ward, community midwives and other health care settings.
- To work in partnership with parents and other carers, empowering them to help safely care for their child.
- To ensure communication with parents and other carers is established and maintained.
- Acting as a point of contact for parents/ carers who need advice and provide an efficient message system for the medical and midwifery staff.
- In liaison with midwives and medical staff help to ensure that the needs of women and babies are met.
- To work closely with midwives, doctors and other healthcare professionals within maternity services to ensure good communication both written and electronic.
- Inform Royal Free London, community midwives of all in area discharges that occur each day.
