Main duties of the job

This is a new consultant post based at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals and the focus will be pleural medicine and lung cancer. The job will comprise a mix of inpatient care and outpatient clinics, and there is flexibility to allow successful applicants to grow and develop the service according to their experience. There will be considerable opportunity for service development and participation in clinical research as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCT in respiratory and general medicine or interview within 6 months of CCT date

  • Other higher degree or diploma

Experience

  • Broad experience in general respiratory medicine
  • Subspecialty experience in pleural medicine
  • Sub-specialty experience in lung cancer

Desirable

  • Pleural fellowship or equivalent
  • Prior experience in leading and developing a service

  • Ability to work constructively and within multi-disciplinary teams across a variety of settings
  • Motivated, flexible and enthusiastic

Skills and Aptitudes

  • Ultrasound competence to at least Primary Operator
  • Independent operator for pleural procedures including intercostal drain insertion, IPC and surgical chest drain
  • Strong teaching skills and experience
  • Understanding of clinical governance and quality improvement methodology
  • Understanding of and some experience of clinical research

Desirable

  • Ultrasound competence to at advanced operator level as per BTS guidance
  • Independent operator for pleural procedures including US-guided pleural biopsy (D)
