Job summary

Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR equivalent) in trauma & orthopaedic surgery at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based at Barnet Hospital. Elective clinics and trauma will be predominantly at the Barnet Hospital sites. Elective operating will be carried out predominantly at Chase Farm Hospital with some elective clinics at this site as well. The post is suitable for a person who wishes to improve their trauma and orthopaedic knowledge and skills, participate in teaching, both undergraduate and post graduate, and develop their research interests. This post will be under the supervision of a named consultant, who will act as the educational supervisor.The successful candidate will become part of the department, which has 24 consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeons based across the Trust. The successful candidate will play an active role in the day to day provision of orthopaedic care to our patients. They will also be expected to participate and develop the teaching and research output of the department.The post is for a period of six months in the first instance. This post arises from a deanery training gap.

Main duties of the job

The job plan will include Outpatient clinics,Elective operating lists, Trauma operating lists,Fracture clinics,Trauma meetings, On call commitments. The job plan is subject to change in accordance with the needs of the service. It will however allow time for administration and continuing professional development. The post holder will be expected to undertake a flexible week day operating list depending on the availabilities of theatres during the week. The post holder will be given reasonable notice of these lists. The on call commitments are shared between 3 senior clinical fellow and 7 SpR trainees.

About us

Consultation and treatment is provided for all general orthopaedic ailments and benefits from a consultant body with established interests in the sub-specialist areas of upper limb surgery, hand surgery, lower limb surgery, foot and ankle surgery and spinal surgery. Orthopaedic trauma is managed with assessment of patients in the out-patient fracture clinics and following urgent admission via the accident & emergency department. The senior clinical fellows at all sites are supported by a number of consultant surgeons, juniors including SpR's, Staff Grade Doctors, FY Doctors, a Trust Registrar, and Associate Specialist

The postholder will undertake elective clinics, and will undertake one to two whole day operating lists per week according to demand. Operating lists will be under consultant supervision.The postholder will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of orthopaedic surgery, and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility which relates to orthopaedic surgery.The postholder will be expected to be actively involved in the day to day running of the department.
