Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a full-time permanent band 7 Cancer Service Manager to join the Royal Free London cancer services department.

You will have a proven track record of service delivery and have significant NHS operational management experience in a dynamic, patient focused environment. All-round first-class communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work under pressure, at times managing several conflicting priorities. Excellent staff management skills and experience of managing cancer pathways to achieve key performance targets is required. You will work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team members.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of performance driven service management experience in the NHS and will be looking for the opportunity to develop their skills.

Main duties of the job

  • To manage administrative and support teams within the service / directorate
  • Deliver appraisal and mandatory training requirements for all staff within these teams
  • Lead the directorate performance management systems ensuring that Trust and monitor standards are understood and adhered to and that performance reports are produced to enable divisional compliance
  • Support the governance arrangements within the directorate including audit,complaints, incidents, risk and health and safety.
  • To be responsible to the Assistant Operations Manager for financial performance relating to delegated budgets and operational performance of the service /directorate
  • Represent the Assistant Operations Manager as required

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Support the infrastructure which measures performance across the trust (including Cancer reports, waiting lists, discharge summary completion, outpatient new to follow up ratios, diagnostic treatment status, length of stay). Ensure data validation is completed to achieve required national and local Cancer targets and milestones.
  • Support the investigation of patient complaints, analysing the issues and identifying any faults in procedures, processes or the treatment of patients and making appropriate recommendations to the Assistant Operations Manager and others to avoid future
  • Assist the Assistant Operational Manager with the collation and review of RCAs for service improvement occurrences.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with staff to ensure they are kept up to date with divisional business plans and operational requirements.
  • To manage administration and support staff employed within service / directorate and ensure their MAST and appraisal compliance is at acceptable levels.
  • Manage timely and effective recruitment and retention of staff in conjunction with the Human Resources department.
  • Work with clinical colleagues and the site management team to facilitate effective bed management
  • Support the promotion of World Class care culture and work in a way that is patient-centred, involves service users, responds positively to feedback from user groups and promotes teamwork across services.
  • To manage delegated budgets effectively and within the resource constraints agreed during budget setting.
  • Act as Service User representative for Somerset Cancer Registry system, managing upgrades and system issues.
  • Assist with MDT team escalations for static pathways and bottlenecks and pick up thematic issues with the respective services to support effective patient pathway management.
  • Assist with IT and Videoconferencing issues at MDT meetings, working with IT/VC providers on testing and solutions.
