Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to support the Diagnostics Division, as a Histopathology Service Unit Manager within Pathology service. The post will be predominantly based at Broomfield , working across the MSE with other Pathology colleagues. We are looking for a person with recent and robust NHS operational experience. This is a full time position with responsibility for delivery on a number of overarching Histopathology performance target which span the Division. These will include, but are not restricted to, a focus on Cancer and Urgent performance and the TAT delivery, staff engagement and communication, workforce planning, oversight on delivery of the Divisions financial efficiency target and working closely with externally provided data (GIRFT, Model Hospital, NHSE Reginal Histopathology recovery PQAD etc) to drive service improvement.

Main duties of the job
As a Service Manager, you will be responsible for a range of clinical specialities across the service. Alongside the management team, you will be responsible for managing and developing services delivered across the Directorate.
You will be operationally responsible for the day to day running of the service, and will be required to monitor national performance targets specific to ensure they are achieved, and ensure corrective action is taken when necessary.
Monitor all Laboratory and Admin staffing daily and escalate where necessary and issues which can not be addressed locally.
You will work closely with colleagues across both MSE and with our Pathology Partner Pathology First in to ensure that pathways are optimised for both urgent and routine testing.

- Continue to improve Turnaround times and establish effective monitoring systems, taking corrective action in conjunction with Laboratory and Clinical staff.
- Assist in reviewing demand and capacity planning on a regular basis, ensuring compliance with local and national targets and continuous improvement.
- In conjunction with Clinical Lead ensure that staff rotas are adequate and take corrective action when required. Ensure that rotas are planned and take into consideration current vacancy/recruitment status.
- Actively engage in and lead Communication Huddles and use them as a catalyst to promote a culture of continuous quality improvement.
- Develop and support the deployment of standard operating procedures to reinforce the agreed standard ways of working.
- Highlight and report any areas of over or under performance and act as appropriate.
- Responsible for ensuring observation of Professional Codes of Conduct, Health and Safety at Work regulations, Data Protection Act, and the Code of Practice.
- Responsible for reviewing and updating departmental policies and protocols to ensure compliance with the Trusts and Department of Health requirements.
- Ensure that there are adequate Governance procedures in place and that any concerns are addressed and/or escalated as appropriate.
- Participate in the Senior Manager calls and performance and assurance boards.
- Monitor TAT and report on variances, present analysis of trends, proposing ideas for future service improvements.
- The post holder will be expected to undertake service improvement and transformation projects across the service and to work closely with colleagues to review services and delivery of care.
