Job summary

This appointment is for a full-time Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who can provide us a range of clinical activities across obstetrics and gynaecology. Additional skills in colposcopy, outpatient hysteroscopies, triaging of patients on 2 week wait pathway will help our department to thrive.

The expectations extend to your contribution to all elements of Clinical Governance as well as Advice and Guidance. Additional PAs can be added based on your skills. The successful candidate will be expected to cover labour ward on a rotational basis along with ante-natal and ambulatory gynaecology clinics, elective and emergency theatres.

To provide expert input to cases within the delivery suite and antenatal wards that deviate from the norm. To provide risk analysis and management plans for all cases that require specialist input.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a consultant-led service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to offer expert opinion and considerate advice to women with complications in any stage of pregnancy and acute gynaecology.
  • Develop the Obstetrics and Gynaecology service by working closely with other colleagues to standardise pathways of care.
  • Provide training for trainees in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • Evolve and write, in line with Trust governance policies, pathways for patients seen within the Obstetrics and Gynaecology service.
  • Work with the multidisciplinary team to undertake a senior role in the general provision of Obstetric and Gynaecological Services at Basildon Hospital and MSE.
  • Provide senior leadership in the management of high-risk patients antenatally, intrapartum and postpartum in close co-operation with other specialties.
  • To provide gynaecological oncological services in outpatients, theatre and emergency care.
  • Facilitate the triage of emergency gynaecology operations as per NCEPOD recommendations to avoid operating out-of-hours (i.e. 17h00 to 08h00) whenever feasible. Consultant in Obstetrics and attend all theatre cases to perform surgery, unless satisfied a trainee is competent to perform the operation with indirect supervision.
  • Assessment and delivery of immediate medical attention of deteriorating elective post- 12 op gynaecology patients.
  • Obstetric on call commitments as part of the departmental on call rota (1 in 14).
  • Support obstetric colleagues with advice/ surgical assistance, e.g. major obstetric haemorrhage.
  • Support the Emergency Surgical Consultant with a consultant gynaecological opinion/ ultrasound.

Essential

  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • Completed MRCOG or equivalent.
  • CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • ATSM in advanced Labour ward management

Desirable

  • ATSM in Colposcopy/BSCCP accreditation
  • Intermediate/Advanced Ultrasound Qualification

Experience
