Job summary

  • Band 6 training post, responsible for the maintaining and development of the Enhanced Recovery after Surgery, (ERAS) Straight to Test (STT) and Surgical Site Infection Surveillance (SSIS) services.

  • Work closely with the Band 7 and medical leads for ERAS, STT & SSIS, the Director of infection prevention and control (DIPC), the Matron for Surgery, and the administration support, to input, record and provide analysis of the relevant service data

  • Provide highly specialised advice & consultation regarding the surgical site infection surveillance (SSIS), straight to test (STT) and the enhanced recovery (ERAS) services within the surgical directorate to colleagues, external agencies, working autonomously within professional guidelines.

  • Take responsibility for the clinical care provided on the wards and in Outpatients related to these services

  • Deliver a patient-centred, clinically effective, proactive and dynamic service from the patient's outpatient/pre-admission clinic appointment/emergency admission to discharge.

Main duties of the job

  • Support the band 7, Matron for Surgery, DIPC, and Lead Consultant for ERAS, STT and SSIS to ensure operational policies, guidelines and protocols are kept up to date and adhered to, and in accordance with NHS England and NICE, improving outcomes guidance.
  • Work closely with the Matron for surgery, Upper and Lower GI, Urology and Vascular Consultants, Oncologists and ward nursing staff to ensure effective delivery of care and adherence to National Standards for ERAS, STT and SSIS.
  • Support the audit activity of the department. Implement and manage agreed SSI audit information from preadmission to post discharge follow-up, and assimilation of patient questionnaires, ensuring staff understand and participate in the evaluation of outcomes.
  • Promote interagency multidisciplinary working by developing joint action plans, protocols and pathways to ensure continuous quality improvement of services' delivery.
  • Actively support patients & their families, giving support & advice on pre and post-operative treatments, including surgery, endoscopy or radiology procedures, diet, exercise, wound care and discharge.

    • Post holder will work closely with the medical lead for SSIS, STT and ERAS, the director for Infection prevention and control (DIPC), DDoN, Matron for surgery, Nursing staff and Clinicians in embedding the principles of Clinical Governance in order to maintain / improve and develop high standards of patient care, and thereby ensuring that the patients are treated with dignity and respect.

    • Facilitate care pathways for patients providing continuity and expert advice which ensures that care is tailored to meet the specific diagnosis.

    • Actively implement initiatives outlined within the Trusts local Nursing and Midwifery Strategy and where relevant take the lead for relevant projects

    • To ensure that nursing and Health Advising practice reflects current clinical developments, evidence-based guidance and is based on sound nursing audit and research, identifying opportunities for the promotion and participation in such activities.

    • Post holder is responsible for Trust policies, national guidance for ERAS, STT and SSIS patients.

    • Promote and develop Nurse Led services within area of responsibility and ensure all staff actively participate in the provision of holistic care.
