Job summary
We are delighted to offer the opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our Clinical Biochemistry Team. The successful applicant will work in collaboration with our strong clinical, scientific and laboratory teams to actively lead and develop the clinical biochemistry service.
The primary hospital base is currently at Basildon Hospital but the successful candidate may need to work across any of the hospital sites and the off-site laboratory.
Laboratory services are provided on each of the 3 hospital sites. There is also an offsite Hub laboratory based in Basildon. Each of the laboratories offer fully automated lab equipped with Beckman AU's for chemistry and Dxi for routine immunoassay, as well as Roche e411 for cardiac assays. Specialist areas include proteins; HPLC; fetal abnormality screening; FIT screening and a rapidly developing POC service provided for both secondary care and community.
The laboratory services have achieved UKAS accreditation and are accredited training departments with the National School of Healthcare Science for the STP programme, and with the IBMS for training of Biomedical Scientists.

Main duties of the job
Provide a comprehensive Clinical Biochemistry service to the Trust and ICB and:
- Support the Consultant Clinical Scientist team in the clinical, advisory and scientific work of the department.
- Responsible for ensuring that the Clinical Biochemistry service provided is of consistently high quality and in line with Trust objectives as well as national standards.
- Support research and development activit
- May be required to work at the different hospital sites within the group. (Broomfield, Basildon and Southend)

- You are expected to engage in the process of your own personal development, this includes actively participating in the appraisal process, which will include an annual appraisal with your line manager
- Be involved in the development and oversight of the laboratory services
- Participate in the duty Biochemist day rota and provide interpretation of results and advice to Clinical Staff and General Practitioners
- Clinical liaison is an integral and key part of the role and the post holder will be assigned to individual directorates or Primary Care Trusts to establish close collaboration
- Ensure the department maintains the quality management systems required for ISO15189 accreditation.
- To be responsible for the development and service provision of a specialist Service
- To develop specialised assay services
- Responsible for investigating complaints or issues specific to the department in line with Trusts Clinical Governance requirements.
- To develop and oversea the implementation of new methods
- Provide an interpretative service to the clinician and other users of the service
- Develop specialist liaison with a clinical specialty
- Manage tasks to an agreed standard within an agreed time frame.
- Understand the management structure of the department and own role within the structure.
- To deputise for consultant colleagues as appropriate.
- Demonstrate flexibility in carrying out their work priorities within the team context.
- Attend local and corporate induction sessions and Trust mandatory recall training.
- Implement Trust and Departmental policies including sickness reporting, annual and special leave, capability, disciplinary and Health and Safety.
