Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation trust is currently looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and forward-thinking Senior Pharmacy Technician to join their clinical trials team.
The post holder will assist in the provision of Pharmacy Services for the management of Clinical Trial medications across the Basildon and Southend hospitals sites.
Basildon and Southend Hospitals are part of the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and the pharmacy department has around 300 staff working across 3 sites.
Although only recently merged, the pharmacy departments across the three sites have been working together under one Chief Pharmacist for a number of years. During this time we have developed standardised systems and re-designed new and on-going services supporting the wider organisation's clinical configuration changes.
The clinical trials team within pharmacy, work very closely with the Research and Development department within the Trust to support the many and varied clinical trials in operation.
Main duties of the job
This is a senior technician post within the clinical trials team in the pharmacy department, working closely with the research and development department to provide an effective Pharmacy service for the management of clinical trial medications.
Main duties and responsibilities include:
- To have a good working knowledge of ICH-GCP, acquired through national training courses and continual professional development, and keep up-to-date in accordance with Trust and national requirements.
- To ensure all clinical trials are managed efficiently within pharmacy according to anticipated time lines.
- To manage the clinical trials diary.
- To co-ordinate the pharmaceutical aspects of clinical trials; organisation of supply, storage and quality control of IMPs.
- To oversee the accurate and smooth running of clinical trials involving IMP management, dispensing, record keeping and stock control within pharmacy on a day to day basis.
The post holder will already hold a Regional Checking Accreditation (ACT) and have experience in a hospital environment demonstrating supervisory attributes.

The principal objective of this role is to oversee the pharmacy operational aspects of all clinical trials of investigational medicinal products at the relevant MSE pharmacy site. The post holder will be expected to:
- Co-ordinate the efficient and smooth running of operational pharmacy aspects of oral and IV clinical trials at Basildon and Southend Hospitals.

- Lead on the pharmacy site set-up and close-out of clinical trials as well as all aspects of Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs) management in between.
- Support the lead MSE clinical trials pharmacist to ensure that all documentation including standard operating procedures are accurate, relevant, in date and according to GCP (Good Clinical Practice) requirements.
- Develop and maintain systems consistent with GCP requirements.
- Ensure the financial aspects all commercial clinical trials fees are appropriately managed so that all fees are invoiced
- Ensure professional and legal standards are adhered to.
- Ensure that Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records are maintained.
