Job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Anaesthetist to our directorate with an interest in Obstetrics. The successful candidate will join our team of 18 Consultants and 18 Speciality Doctors in providing anaesthetic services at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

In addition to the busy Central Delivery Suite, Southend University Hospital is a centre for cancer care with integrated surgery, oncology and palliative care teams.

The provisional AAC date for this vacancy will be 10th November 2023.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join six obstetric anaesthetic consultants as well as a team of experienced specialty doctors and fellows.

The maternity unit at Southend Hospital averages around 4000 deliveries a year. The Central Delivery Suite (CDS) comprises two fully equipped obstetric theatres, 4 low risk delivery rooms and 6 high risk delivery rooms, including a high dependency area. The Extended Stay unit is an additional 4 bedded bay within CDS, where patients who require frequent observations are kept. The Unit is working towards full compliance with the Ockenden Report recommendations across all domains, and all staff working on CDS are required to keep PROMPT training up to date.

In addition to the 24h emergency obstetric theatre cover, the Unit runs separate elective LSCS lists 3 days a week. Anaesthetic staffing consists of two obstetric anaesthetic consultants, senior fellow/specialty doctor for CDS and ward covering epidurals and follow ups as well as junior anaesthetic trainees on obstetric anaesthesia modules. Obstetric anaesthetists also cover maternity preassessment and the high risk obstetric clinic.
