Following investment an exciting opportunity has arisen for a new cohort of committed and enthusiastic Trainee Clinical Coders to join our established team at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. The posts will generally be based at Southend University Hospital but will also require travel to Basildon University Hospital and Broomfield Hospital.

The Clinical Coding team records information about every inpatient admitted by the Trust using alphanumeric codes (from the ICD-10 diagnosis classification and OPCS-4.10 procedure classification), investigating all aspects of their journey from start to finish. These records can be understood throughout the NHS, used to plan for future patient care and can influence Trust income.

You will be responsible for assigning correct clinical codes to diagnoses and operative procedures against nationally agreed standards, in order to produce reliable clinical information for commissioning, reimbursement (based on HRG assignment), audit, research and performance indicator production.

Main duties of the job

With the support of our team of experienced trainers, you can expect to:

  • Undertake the mandatory 21-day Clinical Coding Standards Course within 6 months of appointment.
  • Receive specialist on-the-job training for approximately 18 months.
  • Study for the National Clinical Coding Qualification within 3 years of appointment.

You will be educated to A Level, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent standard and will have some knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. You will be a good lateral thinker and problem solver, pay attention to detail and enjoy working as part of a team.

You will start at pay band 3 and career progression will be encouraged and supported by the Trust.
