Mid and South Essex is looking for a qualified Diagnostic Medical Physics Experts (MPE) aspiring to qualify as an RPA, to join our expanding team covering the Mid and South Essex region. The team is based in the newly crowned city of Southend-on-Sea, and you would be joining a team supporting Diagnostic Radiology across the three main hospital sites in Southend, Basildon and Broomfield.
You would be working with and assisting in managing a team of physicists and technologists to deliver our radiation protection service, providing Diagnostic MPE input, leading on routine QC, and service development.
Following the recent widespread replacement of key imaging equipment, and the imminent opening of three CDC sites, the team is growing and now is a great opportunity for suitable candidates to help lead and develop a service fit for the future.
Southend and its surrounds are a great place to live, with the longest pier in the UK, great facilities, under an hour away from London and an International airport a short walk from the hospital. Did I mention the seaside?
We work closely with several departments including Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine and the AML PET-CT service alongside supporting MRI and laser safety.

Main duties of the job
- As Lead Diagnostic Medical Physics Expert (MPE) for Diagnostic Imaging work across the Mid and South Essex Trust (MSE) and outside contracts advise the departments on best practice.
- Demonstrate or acquire expertise as the Radiation Protection Advisor to complement MPE responsibilities.
- Lead role in routine diagnostic quality assurance and control across the MSE trust and other organisations with contracts with the trust.
- To take responsibility for developing the protocols and procedures under IR(ME)R across the MSE. (Ionising Radiology (Medical Exposure) Regulations)
- To provide support and leadership to trust Radiation safety and training programme.
- Provide Diagnostic Medical Physics input into the Alliance Medical PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography - Computer Tomography) facility sited at Southend Hospital and others as directed.
