Deputy Ward Manager - Estuary Oncology Ward

Job summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen in Estuary Ward, our 18-bedded oncology, hematology and palliative ward based at Southend Hospital.

We are looking for two individuals with strong and professional leadership qualities to join us as our Deputy Ward Managers on a fixed-term contract for one-year to cover maternity leave. You will need to have qualities of multi skilling within the ward environment .

Good teamwork is essential and you will need to be approachable and uphold the trust values of being respectful caring, compassionate and excellent.

There are great opportunities to develop within the ward to increase knowledge and skills within the oncology, hematology and palliative field.

Main duties of the job

If you are successful, main responsibilities will include:

  • To monitor the practice and effectiveness of nursing actions, ensuring these are carried out with full regard for the safety of the patient and staff involved.
  • To ensure that delegation of tasks is performed equitably, effectively, in accordance with the nurse's individual skills, development needs and within clear parameters of responsibility.
  • To ensure effective communication within the team and externally throughout the 5 day operating of the unit.
  • To ensure feedback mechanisms are in place, directing and encouraging as appropriate.
  • To provide specialist nursing advice or nursing practice within the ward/department, and provide advice to other wards/departments within the Trust.
  • To evaluate the effects of nursing actions and plan improvements for the benefit of the service.
  • To identify opportunities for improvement in services and where appropriate implement change process
