Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Job summary

The radiation protection is expanding it's team to meet the needs of an expanding organisation - recently 3 major hospital sites have merged into one group!

Though small, we are very friendly and always encourage our staff to get involved in as much as possible - and fully support training when required. Though we are looking for an experienced technician we are happy to train up someone looking for further experience.

The department provides Radiation Protection, Medical Physics and Radiology Physics services to the MSE Trusts across Essex including Southend, Basildon and Broomfield hospitals, and some private sites. This involves supporting departments using X-rays to achieve compliance with Radiation Safety legislation (IRR17 and IR(ME)R17) and operate with good radiation safety practice.

The role is primarily to carry out x-ray equipment checks (including quality assurance assessments and optimisation) but other activities include patient radiation dose assessments; audits under relevant legislation; provision and updating of Local Rules and running training courses.

You will be expected to deliver quality control tests on a range of x-ray equipment at a number of different sites and must be able to travel between the MSE sites.

Main duties of the job

To be able to communicate with the team and staff at other sites for booking and communication of results; sharing information clearly.

Respond in a timely manner to enquiries from equipment users, ensuring a high-quality responsive service.

Perform routine equipment surveys on a range of patient critical X-ray and ancillary equipment requiring high precision measurements.

Investigate faults found, either at the survey or reported by the user, in order to inform maintenance engineers.

Carry out routine intercomparisons/calibrations of x-ray quality assurance equipment.

Assist in providing technical support, referring complex problems to a senior member of the scientific team, as appropriate.

Perform routine equipment surveys on a range of patient critical X-ray and ancillary equipment requiring high precision measurements.

You will have to work within a clinical environment (diagnostic areas and theatres) and so must understand the importance of clinical standards within these areas.

Implement and ensure compliance with department operating procedures, in any areas of work for which the post holder carries responsibility.
