Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at MSE for a Cancer and Oncology Matron to cover for a 6month period.

We are looking for a driven individual with senior experience and leadership skills to achieve and maintain high standards of clinical care within the oncology wards and cancer departments.

A nurse leader and role model for the staff we represent, to drive and monitor the standards for quality and safety for our patients.

The role will include working alongside the senior leadership team for future service delivery. This includes being integral in professional and practice development within the service to meet the national and local agenda.

Main duties of the job

If successful, you will:

  • play a key role in achieving and maintaining the highest standards and quality of clinical care across Cancer, the Oncology wards and departments at Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Work in conjunction with the ward and clinic nurse managers, the post holder will ensure the ward/ clinical environments are conductive to service user care and positive service user experience.
  • manage nursing staff, and be accountable to the Associate Director of Nursing for all aspects of the quality of services delivered within the area of authority.
  • maintain a visible professional presence where patients, carers and staff can turn for assistance, advice and support.
  • lead and participate in projects and areas of work, which reflect clinical, professional, National and Corporate objectives for Cancer and Oncology services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To work within cancer and oncology based at Southend Cancer Centre but covering services across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration of the Associate Director of Nursing for Cancer , General Managers to ensure high quality patient care is provided.
  • Advise and support the Associate Director of Nursing for Cancer on professional nursing issues and provide professional leadership for staff groups.
  • To provide guidance, support and effective clinical leadership for ward and clinic nurse managers and take responsibility for standards of clinical practice, creating an environment where excellent clinical care is provided.
  • To ensure performance standards are met and take the necessary action if they are not.
  • Directly line manage ward , cancer CNSs, clinic managers and through this staff group ensure that all member of the team are managed in accordance with trust policy, procedure and best practice.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director of Nursing for Cancer and General Managers develop workforce plans, via the ward clinic management structure which anticipates service changes and development, address monitoring recruitment, retention and workforce supply by ensuring that job descriptions are reviewed regularly and job specifications are updated, linking with the Director for Nursing when required.
  • Ensure the effective risk management systems are in place within the areas and contribute to service strategies to manage risk.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the Trusts Nursing Strategy.
  • Support the ward/department managers with their budget management. Ensure that changes in workload and patterns of service are brought to the attention of the Associate Director of Nursing for Cancer and assist in the necessary changes in budget.
  • To ensure the principles of clinical governance and practiced and demonstrated on a daily bases being reflected through quarterly reports and action plans. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring ownership of clinical governance at all levels of clinical staff on the site.
  • Contribute to the reduction of healthcare acquired infection be ensuring a high standard of infection control practice in the light of research current best evidence and legislation.
  • Ensure appraisals systems are in place and that all staff have personal development plans and receive appraisal which are reviewed annually.
  • Monitor and manage sickness/absence and to take action where performance standards are not achieved to ensure Trust objectives are achieved.
  • To represent the Division where appropriate the Trust forums both within and external to the trust.
  • To investigate complaints, incident grievance, performance issues developing action plans and make recommendations as required.

Research and Audit

Lead in developing a culture, and act as a resource, of evidence based practice and research awareness.

  • Lead in identifying areas in which nursing research might usefully take place to improve care.
  • Implement and use audit data to improve quality of service.
  • To be responsible in updating own research knowledge in current practice.
Personal and Professional Responsibilities
