Job summary

Occupational Therapist - Band 5 Rotational post, Full time (37.5 hours) Therapy Services, Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford - Part time hours and job share may be considered.

Come and join our Band 5 Occupational Therapy in-patient rotations. If you have recently qualified or are an OT student who qualifies this year then we want to hear from you.

Our rotations are 6 months long: Orthopaedics,Surgery/Respiratory, Medical/Elderly Medicine, Stroke, St Andrew's Centre - Plastic surgery and burns, Emergency floor - including Frailty and ED. We also have the potential to offer rotations in the other hospitals that make up the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

Ideally you will have experience of the acute hospital setting but if not we are looking for transferable skills: excellent communication and assessment skills, problem solving, and a passion for helping people regain their independence.

  • Degree or equivalent diploma in Occupational Therapy and HCPC registered.
  • Assess and treat own caseload of patients as an autonomous practitioner, planning and developing appropriate rehabilitation and discharge plans.
  • Liaises with patients, family members, carers, equipment services, social care and health professionals to ensure each patient receives high quality and coordinated care.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continued development of skills and knowledge through CPD, training and involvement in the rotation scheme.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertakes comprehensive/ standardised Occupational Therapy assessments addressing occupational performance and skill deficits in the areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure.
  • Jointly identifies Occupational Therapy goals with the patients as part of the overall care plan, using therapeutic use of self and graded activity to achieve agreed goals.
  • Undertakes assessments of patient's home environment and social situation to advise and implement provision of equipment and adaptations to gain maximal independence.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with patients and carers to ensure understanding of the patient's condition and compliance with the treatment plan to attain mutually agreed goals.
  • Prioritises own workload and organises own work to meet these priorities and reduce risks to quality, seeking support and guidance as necessary.

To support transition from student to therapist our Professional Lead for Occupational Therapy and Practice Development Occupational Therapist work closely with the band 5 therapists to provide a supportive environment for staff to develop during their rotations. We also have highly skilled band 7 Occupational Therapists who are able to provide supportive rotations with regular supervision and teaching within each rotation.

You will have regular clinical supervision, as well as rotational and annual appraisal. The post holder will participate in our rostered weekend and public holiday service.
